Thanks, Dolphin Babe. The #3 is just the working title.....I had 3 songs I was doing that day, so, just kind of stuck to it for now.... :o
 
Dolphin, can you possibly post a bigger picture of a Dolphin??? This one isn't quite spilling off my screen. :eek:

Yeah...just got a new bass, and hope to have it tracked. Also have a pretty good idea of the song structure, but am stuck on adding a sort of melody line to it. Here is the link to the basic progressions I have so far, condensed, and with the drum track to the main verse..

Hopefully I get a better idea of the tune tomorrow, as I think I am home all day.... :D

That's the ugliest guitar I've heard all day! :p

You probably want it that way, and when I say ugly I mean that as a compliment.

The lick is pretty straight forward. The mix needs work, but I guess that's not what we're focusing on here... but even in the rough stages the drums don't sound bad.

I'm thinking distorted synth goodness for a melody here. ;)

Aha!!!!

I think this could be the most significant factor in the guitar sound here (not the guit but the way it is strung up.) I thought of this idea for bass a few years back and never tried it--getting a 5-string set and using the lowest 4 on my 4-string bass. What stopped me was the thought that I would need to have a custom nut carved to accomodate the larger strings. Did you just slap the strings right on the standard nut? Did you tune any differently? Or did you tune the low string to B and the rest up from there? Anything you can tell us about this would be cool.

This sounds killer, Ed. Very, very BIG.
 
Pinky, Incanus, thanks dudes. I'm still ironing out the rest of the song, and my wife just bought me a new bass last night, so I am adding some bass. This is a pretty rough mix, just to see where the song is at, and I still want to figure out a melody line/ interlude thingy, but have been struggling with that. This is the main verse, followed by the chorus, but just to the main verse drums....

Pinky, yeah, I wanted a guitar tone that hides the flaws in my voice, so the dirtier, the better... :D

Incanus, it's a cheap Ernie Ball set of strings, and I did nothing but slap them on and tune it. Didn't seem to have any trouble. Standard tuning, like a 7 string would be....B, E, A, D, G, B. It stays in tune really well, but I do have the springs tightend on the whammy, so it is locked back.
I haven't tried this particular setting from teh POD on a regular tuned guitar, but now that SnakeDog has some time, I am going back to work on a tune with him that uses standard tuning.

Dogman, on the updated version, the guitars seem to be down the mddle. I remember loving how they were spread on the original. I'll go back and listen to the original later and see if I'm not going crazy.

You're probably right, Rami. This has 2 seperate guitar tracks, both panned about 75% L-R. These are both done on the POD. When I actually do the song, I will use some mic'd guitars. This does sound a bit more flat, or less lively to me. Thanks for pointing that out. That is something I will really have to watch when I go to mix this. It definitely needs a bit more space....

I actually have an old Gateway comp set up for my DAW. I use Adobe Audition to record with. Some pretty cheap equipement really....A delta 44 soundcard, DMP3 for my pre, and both these guitars are direct through the POD. Bass is through a Sansamp DI.....

Yeah baby!!! That's how I remember it hitting me the first time around. This kiks some major ass.
 
The only other nit pick now would be to scoop something out of the bass drum, if you can. I don't know if you have access to the individual drums that way. If so, I would narrow the "Q", boost the mids to like +16 and go through the spectrum and see which freequency really "sings" or "hums". It might be around 1k, or as low as 400hz. When you find it, cut it...Something is not allowing that bass drum to hit me in the stomach. It's close though...Just find what to cut if you can. That's a nit pick, but I tohught I'd throw it out there.

Thanks, man. I do have access to the individual tracks. I think I eq'd this mix a bit bass heavy, so that could be it, plus I didn't eq the kick seperately. I left it alone, but I didn't really know exactly what to do. I hope I can come up with a suitable drum beat for the chorus portion, as the song is a bit monotonous with just this one drum beat throughout. But thanks for the info. When done, hopefully, it will sound pretty good.

WHoa DOG, you've got these things all over the place!! :D I loved 3, but now I am liking this too. I think I like the heavier Bass in 3. I love Bass. But now I must go and listen to 3 again. :confused: :D
