I am begining the (slow) process of trying to assemble a decent home recording studio. As all of you know, this can be an expensive proposition. Among the items I am looking to pickup are a Mackie Mixer, and Event Gina, an AKG C1000 microphone and some effects proessor. In the meantime, I am using Cakewalk Pro and a Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold Card as an interface. I don't have an external mixer right now and I would like to be able to:

a) get a good Mic sound for vocals
b) get a good Mic'ed amp sound
c) get a good Line amp sound

Two products which have caught my eye for these purposes are the Hughes and Kettner RedBox Pro and the MidiMan Audio Buddy. Any thoughts at which might be better? I am also considering taking my 100 bucks or so and investing in a ZOOM 503 to take care of my guitar/bass/amp problems.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

amonte

I have the Red-Box and have used it for many recordings in my home-studio. It works best for solos, I think. The rhythm sound is a bit harsh and needs EQ a lot( i.e taking some of the midrange out. NB! To get a distorted sound through the Red-Box you need some kind of preamp in front of it. Anyway, it provides a real cheap way to get a passable sound on tape.Though, if you can, try miking a real amp instead.( Could be a small practise amp).Good luck with your home studio. It´s fun.

I have an audiobuddy. Its pretty cool for what it is.
You won't have to many problems with noise but this thing isn't gonna add color or warmth. In fact depending on what mixer you have, those preamps might be just as good. If you don't absouluty have to have 2 inputs for 100 bucks i'd get an ART tube MP. 1 channel 100 bucks 1 tube 1 satisfided customer.
