Direct Recording

It all depends on what kind of tone you're after. I've gotten some really surprising successes plugging a Jazzmaster straight in and using an amp emulator in the software (Logic Express). On the other hand, I've only ever been able to get a good tone out of my Rickenbacker 360 by mic'ing the amp, and it pretty much has to be all-tube at that...but then the result is so good that it's worth the extra hassle.

another thing to keep in mind is the line6 guitarport. I use it for ALL my guitar and bass recording. if you spend some time tweaking the sounds you can get some nice tone out of it.
