When I try to directly record an electric bass guitar with passive pick ups I get no signal. Do I need something to boost the signal to a detectable level, or am I doing something wrong?

Yeah. You need a preamp or a DI (direct injection) box to raise from instrument level to line level.

What are you using to record bass?

i used a little begringer D.i. last time i recorded bass and it worked out great.. theyre pretty cheap too...

Is it a passive or active DI? maybe the DI is active and needs a battery or phantom power.

i would get a sansamp bass DI.....thats all youd ever need for bass. granted a nice tube ampeg is pretty kick ass too.

If you are just plugging to a 1/4 input with no preamp that would be the problem.

If you have any kind of preamp on your interface, id suggest using the trs insert on that, and upping the pres gain.

If thats not a option..... id suggest a di box as mentioned above.

I have the rack version and it is ace. Perfect bass tone instantly... i use it for recording and live (with a cheap power amp).
