I have a line 6 FlextoneII with a direct out which i am plugging straight into my yamaha 2816, and the quality of the sound is amazing. My only problem is the humming and unwanted noise I am getting. I was thinking that i need a preamp even though i am using a direct out, and i thought it could also just be my amp. DOes anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

well, it could be a ground issue - having the amp and the recorder in different electrical outlets. If it happens when plugged into the same outlet, try a ground lift on 1 of them.

If you are putting the direct into a preamp as well, the signal may have too much gain on it.

Humming and noise is a fact of life with amplifying electric guitars (especially those with single-coil pickups).

A preamp will just make it all louder, and since your signal is already at line level, there's no point unless you want the coloration imparted by a mic pre. It certainly won't reduce the noise.

Try what Adam suggested. Also try turning around until you find the position where the noise is minimal. It could be that you are in a lousy place to record. My brother-in-law used to live on a hill about 1/2 mile away from a very powerful TV and radio tranmission tower. His guitars hummed and buzzed something awful, and there was really nothing he could do about it...

You can use a noise gate too, which, if set properly, will turn the volume off once the signal from your guitar drops below a certain threshold, so it won't be humming when you're not actually playing...

thanx for the suggestions, mnost of the problem occurs when i turn on the distortion. Im pretty sure its just the amp giving off the noise, but i can you give me some good noise gates so i can check thm out, because i think they will help.
