Is it basically worthless to record direct w/o a direct box? Is there any way around using one, or is the impedence level too different?

My band tried recording last weekend and couldn't get a distorted guitar to sound better than pure static and couldn't get the bass to eliminate a bassy fuzz without making it too quiet. Are we SOL unless we get a box?

Also, are there boxes designed for specific instruments or are they universal?

The strength of the signal is a factor as to if it will work with out a DI or not as well as your guitar/effects and mixer.

The level might be low even more so if you are using a mixer that works at +4dBm. Better to use a -10dBV.

If you cant get enough level then you'll need the DI.

As for bass it's somewhat the same depending on if you have active or passive pickups or in general the output of the bass.
As to the discription you gave of bassy fuzz or static I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Static as in low signal ?
fuzz as in distortion of the signal?
