Digital output, but hardware compressor?

I've got a B ADA8000 going ADAT out to my M-Audio 1814. I'm considering a hardware compressor (likely FMR RNC or Symetrix 501). Even thought it's inputs are going out through ADAT, could I take the line outs on the back of the ADA8000 to the compressor, and take the output to the 1814? Or b/c I'm using ADAT, can I not use the line outs?

Not sure of the question... but if I understand you ... Yes... if the 1814 will allow you to select input by channel... not analog or all adat routing

I guess I'm a little confused, myself. Let me try to explain better...

The ADA8000 sends 8 inputs to the 1814 via ADAT. I want to put a compressor in between 2 of the 8 inputs. The ADA8000 has 8 line outs in the back. Even though it thinks I'm sending 8 thru ADAT, could I still use the line outs (of 2 inputs) to go to the compressor? Or will that not work b/c of the ADAT?

Maybe I explained better, maybe I didn't...just one of those situations where you know what you're talking about, but don't know how to say it.

I'll try to make a picture or something to go along with it if people still don't understand.

Yes this will work as you describe... pick any two analog outputs on the ADA8000 and send them through the compressor to any two analog inputs on the 1814 and you're in business... Do not connect the ADAT in to the the ADA8000 as this automatically routes all of the adat channels to the line outs... The 1814 will recognize all inputs simultaniously...

All of which I found in the manuals...

That's the problem, though. I want the remaining 6 to be taken to the 1814 via ADAT. I don't want them all going analog to the 1814; I'd either be using all of the B pres (do not want), or leaving 2 extra B pres since I want to keep the 2 M-Audio ones in the 1814, which are the same as analog in 1/2 in the back.

So am I going to have to buy a separate pre to use with the compressor?

Or are you saying I can connect the ADAT Out from the ADA8000 to the ADAT In of the 1814, and not connect the ADAT Out from the 1814 to the ADAT In of the ADA8000?

I think that's pretty much what I said...

Dude... RTFM

Here's a picture of what I originally was asking about. 6 ADA channels going thru ADAT, while 2 go thru the comp analog.

Is it possible to go mic>comp>pre instead of mic>pre>comp?

You both need to RTFM.

The ADA8000 does not pass analog audio from the XLR's on the front, through to the XLR's on the back.

Sorry Dizzy, but I don't think it will work the way you want.

OK... I did read the effing manual, in fact I just re-read the effing manual, and no where does it say an effing thing about effing not passing the effing analog in to the effing analog out... but if you're saying the effing thing won't effing pass the signal... I guess I've got to take your effing word for it... since I don't actually own the effing thing, and all I did was RTFM...

Perhaps our manuals differ. Mine discusses it on page 5, under the description for item #4. It says the following...

"A connected analog LINE IN or MIC IN signal is not routed to the analog LINE OUT connector 16. Instead, it will reach the ADAT OUT interface."

Also, I have owned three of these units and they all had the same shortcoming. Only the ADAT IN will feed the XLR OUTS.

(Just trying to help.)
