You're right, cat. The DPS-16 packs some serious power. And from the reviews at Harmony Central, it's apparently easy to use as well. The one thing everyone consistently raves about is the sound quality. So it's going on my list, but may be out of my price range anyway. Thanks for the hint.
 
HepMeSumbody-- I had the same problem as you. I needed bass modelling but when I read reviews of the boss br-532 and br-1180, they said that the bass modeling sounded fluffy and sometimes the wrong note gets recorded. What I did was, I downloaded Cubasis AV from the Steinberg website and I made the bass with that program. I noticed that no one mentioned the tascam 788. That’s because tascam has it’s own forum. If you buy it you won’t even need to upgrade to another recorder because it has 250 virtual tracks and 6 tracks recording at once. Check out the specs at

Instead of paying all kinds of extra money and limiting yourself to only certain units that have internal bass modeling capabilities, why not just go buy a good used bass and learn to play? :) I find the simulations leave much to be desired, and if you're just needing some simple bass parts it wouldn't be too hard to play them yourself, especially since you already play guitar.

Tom, I feel like I need to spend what little free time I have learning to record and mix, rather than learning and practicing bass. You have a good point though, and I've actually tried out a few basses in the past couple of weeks. It's been an experience of self-discovery and I've learned two very important things about myself: I SUCK at bass, and I'm TOO FRIGGING LAZY to overcome my handicap!!!:o But thanks for the sage advice. :)
 
Tom, if you're still around, I decided to take your advice. I'm going to build a Warmoth P-bass. Borrowed a friend's Fender and found out it's not as hard as I thought, on a decent bass. Now, I just have to decide on a multi-tracker...

I just wanted to add that I have the 1180CD, and I'm in flippin' wonderland with it. I would admit freely that there's a certain amount of boning around to figure out what the hell is going on at some points, but the product is good.

Whatever you get, I think you will really enjoy the freedom of digital.

As for your 'sucking' on the bass, bear in mind that many great tracks have less than... heroic performances on some instruments. So why do these things sell? Ultimately, in my humble, playing from the heart and trying to play WITH the other instruments will work. For bass rhythm ideas, listen to the bass drum in the beat you are going to use, if you are going that way, and try to come up with some thing that will not fight with that bass drum.

Another idea might be to actively listen to the bass on music you already have that inspires you. What the hell are they doin' down there? Sharpen your ears and see how the bass works hand in glove mit der drums.

I hope this is not too far off base!
