Digital IN/OUT dissables the analog inputs??

hello,

I've heard, and seen on some posts, that you can use the adats as converters to get into a PC.Currently I have 16 tracks of Adat Blackface and a PC thats on the way. I'm planning to get either a motu 828mkII or Steinbergs Digiset. Both have adat lightpipe and sync ports. So their shouldn't be a problem getting my signal in and out of the pc.
I want to use the adat for tracking and the pc for midi, mastering, controling the adats, and mixing monitor.
But, I thought that if you engage the digital In/Out on the adats, the analog inputs are disabled. Is this true? If so how is it possible to monitor, through the pc, what is coming in on the analog inputs?
What am I missing?
Is this just a blackfasce problem?

I appoligize if this question has been answered before but I just don't understand.
 
For one thing, you can't use the PC to control the ADATs that I'm aware of, it's the master ADAT that will control the PC.

Second - which converters are you going to use to record? Going in to the analog inputs on the ADATs means the signal will appear on the digital outputs which you can record either by the ADAT or the PC, or both...

So I guess I'm not exactly clear on what your issue is....
 
Sorry I'm not being clear, My brain is fried right now.

What I want to do is as follows.

1)Plug instrument into the analog input of the ADAT
2)Have the lightpipe connected to my sound card on my PC for monitoring.
Do I engage the Digita i/o button on the BRC in order for the signal to route through the lightpipe to the PC for monitoring?
If I do engage the Digital i/o, doesn't that override the analog input on the adat which means that I won't be able to hear the instrument thats plugged into the adat input?

I hope this makes sense.

You don't need to engage the digital inputs at all... just leave it off...

An analog signal on the ADAT appears at the digital lightpipe outputs anyways, so you soundcard/interface will be seeing a signal there.

I just ran a test and you're right!!!

I pressed play on the adat and took a look at the lightpipe cabe(unattached), and saw the red light.

You also answered another question for me about my control issue. The adat is master and the pc is slaved. Makes sense.

Now all I have to do is sellect a sound card and get my PC in the mail and I'll be up and running.

I think I going to sellect the steinberg digiset. Any opinions on this card, or suggestions on any others.

Glad it's cleared-up.... I use an RME Hammerfall 96/32 card myself.... works great! 16-channels of Lightpipe I/O, along with ADAT sync.
 
There might be a small gotcha' on that setup in that, if I recall right, each adat's converters can only be used in one direction at a time -in other words, one deck has to be all A/D (analog-in selected) or D/A (digi-selected).
It may pose a restriction depending on how you tend to use it.
I hope my details don't end up being a little off, it's been a while since I used that setup.:D

Actually, I generally record to the HD24, but for the times I do record onto the computer, I use either a Lucid AD9624, or the HD24 as a front end...
 
Sweet. I just joined the HD fold. Mostly needed a decent portable rig. It's been a real time saver over the tape machines.
(Sorry to warp the thread BanbWidtrh.:) )
