That deck is near me and has been on ebay for about 4 months. Started out at about 4 grand and is now down to 450. What some have said here is the technology is so obsolete it would be basically unusable.

haha yeah but it LOOKS SO COOL! a 1" 32 track......that's like a super-cassette deck or something.

How is it obsolete? It has XLR ins and outs, it's usable, are you talking about it's A/D hybrid design?

Haha yeah once I saw on cragslist this lady trying to sell this huge library of reel to reel tapes for 20,000! Then a few days later it was 2,000, then 200, then FREE! :D

Yup, I've seen this a couple of times and it may be a good deal for what it is. I think it retailed originally for something like the cost of a small family home!? :D Isn't it just a top of the line early 16 bit digital tape recorder ? I'd be surprised if one could get parts for this thing. Still, if it runs good, is not beaten to the ground and can be reset to factory specs just like an old analog recorder then $500 is worth it even if you'll get a couple of albums out of it. ;) I just wish the seller didn't force me to download the music clip when you click on the auction. It's pretty annoying and freezes my 'puter!

Ooh, a pro-digi. Can you still get tape for those? Back when Quantegy died, it looked like they were screwed, because ATR & RMGI were only making analogue tape and not the 467 stuff these need.
Apparently there's a studio somewhere in West Wales that has one of these, they also have an MS16, though.

Hehe :D

Yeah, the tape availability thing is a good point, jp. The seller better have a handful available for the poor sap who's thinking of bidding. ;)

Stryper recorded some albums in the 80's on one of those - To Hell With The Devil and (I think) In God We Trust, with the two track version for mixdown. The drums are a bit clicky but it is 80's 'metal' so it fits...

I'd still not touch that thing!!

... and good luck finding 1" reels of digital tape!! ;)
