Digital 8 tracks-need advice

Hi, I'm looking to buy a digital 8 track recorder, and I've come down to the Fostex MR-8 or the Boss BR-8. Anyone have any experience with either one? Anyone have any reccomendations for one over the other? Would one be better in the long run? ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks!
 
The Boss BR-864 is a better one than Fostex, but why dont you try computer recording? It is very flexible and you definitely get much more channels.
 
Comp based recording is better in many respects. However, the standalone solution is generally more stable, more portable and easier to jump into.

Well, Thats a way to put it. I still couldn't accept the fact that for all that money you are paying, all you are just getting 8 tracks with two pre amps. Anyway if you prefer standalone stick on to it, as Todzilla said it is definitely portable, and ease of use.
 
I had been told to get into HD recording when I brought this up to some other people also. I do a little HD stuff with Audacity (I realize it's nothing compared to Pro Tools or Cakewalk products, but for what it is, you can't beat the price...) I want to sort of "bridge the gap" between digital and analog recording by recording to digital, but still having to deal with some of those analog aspects (none of that probably makes sense). Plus this computer is being used by 3 people, so getting time on it could be a problem. For me, it's easier to have something portable that I could plug in to the computer at the end of the day to mix tracks or whatever.

Thanks for your help, I'll be looking into the Boss BR-8. I've heard something recently about memory cards getting phased out (for most digital cameras) and was wondering if this is happening with the music industry as well? If so, anyone know if the Boss is switching to something else? I'd rather wait for a new version than be stuck with the old version using impossible-to-find memory cards!

Electronic gear is kind of like cars; as soon as, or even before, one model comes out, the engineers are working on another one.

I predict that soon Yamaha will put out a 12/16 digital recorder that will operate on voice command. Like, you just say, "record on tracks 3 and 4....add reverb of this program on track 4, let's add some compression on...."


Of course this may be a long way off but new models will keep coming. Sometimes if you get a unit that is ending production, you might get a great price and have a unit that will do you well for a long time.

I keep noticing the words, "User friendly" popping up in ads for HD recorders, etc. It's about time things got "user friendly." But, if you shop around and look and kick the tires, get demos hands on, you will find something to fit your needs and wallet, well maybe not your wallet.

The Fostex MR8 gives you full 16bit 44khz sound. The Boss units don't.
 
I use my Fostex MR-8 for demo work and also combine 16 tracks of sequencer work into it. But if you are looking for quality recording I agree with everyone else that PC studio is the way to go. As I use Music Creator Pro from CakeWalk. It just depends on what your needs are.
