Clunge Monster
So, I'm in the process of making the last few big pushes on the equipment front before buying a premise to house my equipment. In the next few months I will have built a MONSTER of a PC. After that, Its control surface time!

Now, I'm still in the frame of mind that there is NOT enough choice when it comes to control surfaces at all. But hey, I think I've found one i can live with and its bloody reasonably priced as well! As you probably guessed, its the Digidesign Control 24, this on :-

http://www.dynrec.com/control24.html

First question is, where in the uk do i get Digidesign stuff from?!!!

Second question is, am i going to get this and then find out I have to buy interfaces or is this an all in one unit, no hidden costs or extra parts to purchase?

Thanks in advance!

you're fears are right.

control24 is literally just a big mouse with some preamps built in, but no interface.

you can either use one in conjuction with an LE setup (002/003 etc) which more or less leaves the onboard pres out of the loop, or you can get an HD rig and use the onboard pres, OR you can get an HD rig and use your own seperate preamps.

the two main c24s that i've worked on were set up as follows.

1. control24 as control surface and 002rack and octopre for interface/preamps.
2. control24 as control surface and digi 192s as interface with octorpres for preamps.

IMO opinion, the advantages of a control24 with an le setup, over a 003 factory (control surface and interface) aren't worth the money.

also worth noting:
it might just be complete coincidence, but both control 24s that i used were upgrade to the newer c24, as they both completely shat themselves a few months ago.
i'd be sceptical about buying one of these units second hand.
maybe take that with a pinch of salt though, it's just my personal experience.

ah trusty henry. always asking the question that i completely over looked!

good on ye!

I'm not set on pro tools at all no, I'm actually a Sonar user at present.

Some advice on which way to go from here would be nice if you all wouldn't mind!

At the moment I have a basic moble setup, couple of 8pres running firewire into a laptop, works a treat, but i really want to up my game now and show the studio's round here how it should be done!!!

Right, so i've been ploughing through (again) copious amounts of information regarding control surfaces and what not and i've come up with only a small list of things a want in the controller.

TRANSPORT!!!! - definatly a must

No less than 24 channel faders, and masters obviously!

I don't want the desk to do the work, i just want it to control my DAW! So nothing that can do everything and everything, just no bloody need, most of the time the built in stuff sucks anyway!

Arm, solo, mute, select buttons.

So yeah, only 4 essentials really. Obviously things like Basic EQ funcionality would be good and level meters and such but I wouldn't consider them essential as I use plugins for in depth eq and i can quite easily just get another monitor to have the levels shown on there!

So, any suggestions are welcome! :)
