digi design 01 or equivilent??

hello everybody, i need help well with i gues should be my first step.....i need help with an interface or soundcard, are these both the same thing if not do i need one of each?? ok so heres the deal im lookin for an interface equivilent to the digidesgn 01 but at a fraction of the price my partner has this and i want to get something that will give the same sound quality but not have to spen all that money on it.... is there anything anyone can recomend....i was lookin at the "lexicon omega" i definitly need some thing with an midi in and out at least 4 inputs and 2 outs aside from that i think thats all so is there anything like this that can match the quality of the digidesign 01???? also i know after the mix comes mastering can anybody recomend any programs or plugins for this that are user friendly?? thanks for the help
 
PCI cards that fit inside the computer itself are called soundcards. External devices (Firewire, USB, etc) are typically called interfaces.

Despite rumors to the contrary, MANY companies make products that are equal to or better than Digidesign Protools. And many of these are available for a whole lot less money.

For example, here's my current setup:

Compaq Presario laptop; Tracktion and Reason software (Google 'em) and a Tascam US-122 USB interface with an Oxygen 8 kybd.

This setup does everything protools can do and does it better and more economically. Once you augment it with some freeware soft synths from kvr-vst and the audacity freeware audio editor, you are ready to go to town...
 
You could get an M-Box. I don't know the specs on it (in/outs, midi, etc) but it comes with Pro Tools LE, and that's what the 001 comes with, and it's half the price. I don't know, look into it I guess (www.digidesign.com)
