Digi 002 - how are more than 8 channels added?

I've got a Digi 002r system and am looking into adding additional inputs over the typical eight it supports. I understand that this might be done with the SPDIF, ADAT/Lightpipe, or firewire inputs on the Digi 002r but otherwise have hardly an idea of how this is done.

I've got a 20bit ADAT - but would it be able to be used with the lightpipe input given that PTLE records at 24bits?

If not, can you recommend an 8 channel unit that can do this (and maybe one with built-in preamps in addition if there's a pretty decent one out there)? Budget is $400-$700.

Also, how do they sync together?

Currently using preamps on a Soundcraft M8 & Avalon M5 if that helps.

M-Audio Octane is a decent choice. It's $500, eight channels, pretty clean. Presonus digimax lt is around 700 but pretty similar in sound. If you want real cheap you can go with behringer's ada8000, same as the other two units at less than half the price.

use the ADAT 20 bit first

The 20 bit ADAT XT writes the data to the tape at 20 bit, but the converters in the XT20 are 24 bit. You have the ADAT, use your Soundcraft mixer's mic channel or aux direct outs to feed the ADAT ins, ADAT outs into the 002R using optical lightpipe. Use the 002R's 4 internal mic pres & the Soundcraft/ADAT/optical lightpipe ins and you'd have up to 12 inputs, with 4 more line inputs to use for more mic pres. Buy another mic pre with lightpipe outs that is "better" later... use what you have first.

Also, how do they sync together?

if you're just talking about clocking info...just tell Pro Tools to look to set it's Clock Source to ADAT
