I have been recording on 24 tracks of Adat with all outboard gear for a few years now. In the past 3 years I have setup a small DAW running Adobe audition with an EMU soundcard but I only have 2 inputs in this setup. It is cool for doing overdubs/laying down track ideas but the limited track input makes it where I have to track to adat and then transfer to my Daw. My soundcard doesn't have a lightpipe input so I have to transfer each track one by one and then re allign them manually off the click. It is extremely time consuming.
I have recently been searching for an option to get my track inputs up on my daw. I don't want to spend more than $400.00 and I don't need preamps since I have a big outboard console. I would like at least 16 inputs but more than likely I wouldn't be using more than 10-11 at a time. I was considering picking up a used Digi 001 but I have a few questions.
When using the Adat lightpipe input, can you use the other 8 analog inputs at the same time? So in theory, could I use the first 8 analog inputs and then use an Adat as an A/D to get 8 more channels into the software? I know the Digi 001's usually come with Pro Tools Le, will they function with normal pro tools software?
I am using a PC have there been any major compatibility complaints? I know the DIGI 001 is old but it is newer than my Adats that I am currently running. Any other options will be considered. Thanks for the info in advance.

The Digi001 can handle 18 simultaneous inputs, 8 analog, 8 ADAT and 2 SPDIF. It is a discontinued product and the last PTLE version that will work with it is 6.4. It has a PCI card along with the breakout box.

I've used a Digi001 for 6+ years, and still do. I bypassed the preamps and converters with outboard gear.

In the Le software, how many tracks are supported? Also, what types of plugins can you use?

Plugins are RTAS or Audiosuite (but you can get the VST-RTAS wrapper from Fxpansion to use VST plugs)

there may be issues running on newer PCs. I know XP SP2 wasn't 100% compatible with Pro Tools. But there should be a patch for it around the internet somewhere.
