I have an NT-2 and some 4033s in the "bigger than small" diaphragm class. I'd like something different mostly for vocals, but flexible for doing instruments. Anything cool in the around $100 range that wouldn't be a duplication of the above? I know a V67G is the bomb diggity in the range but I would think it's too close to the NT-2. Okt 219 or 319? MXL 990 or V57M? Save my money for a pre or the V69M I really want? Using board pres into DP.

Thanks,
Larry Larraga

SP B1?

SP B1 is mentioned often in this group. I just recieved mine last night...oh yes...don't know if it's different.

I've read Bono, M.Jackson and others have even used SM58's in the big time studios on a given track...for vocals.

Tom Petty has used the SM57 on vocals I read...

maybe a different sound, you can use.

Maybe a dynamic instead of condenser?

Senn 421
Shure SM7

They're all above your price range, but maybe you can save and check out ebay.

What about the Oktava MK 012? No one really talks about this being used for vocals, but it may be worth trying, as we used to use it for spoken word in a top Post-Production House in London! They have nice mics at their disposal, but the little Oktava often held its own. They liked its SPL handling and so used it for shouted passages or crowd work. They are available at GC on a buy one get one free deal for only $99 I believe!

The B1 would be a good addition too.

re: MK 012

Hmmm. That's not a bad idea. And I can save my pennies for a Lomo head to use on one of them... Hmmmmm. :)

re: dynamics.

Yeah, an SM7 has been on my wish list for quite a while now. Just never seem to have the $300 entry around.

Musicians Friend has the MXL V57 on sale for $40 right now. I got one in a trade and it's become my favorite cheap mic.

Probably similar . . . only the Rode will spank it.
LOL.....no chance. I have the Rode, as I said, and they sound pretty different. The V57 sounds like it has a rise in the upper-lows and the low-mids and sounds totally different.
I've mainly used it for sax so far but it sounds very different for that purpose. Plus....for $40, it's a cheap way to add to your mic palette. Or get something else...........your money....your decision.

As in the NT-1 variety or NT-2 ?

If it's the NT1, then it doesn't surpize me at all that a $40 mic would beat out that sorry, bees-in-tinfoil piece of crap. The NT2, though, is a very nice piece of equipment that will spank a cheap Chinese thing with a Marshall logo any day of the week. :D

Actually.....I missed that he was referring to the NT-2. You're correct.....I have the NT-1.
So, of course, I have no knowledge of the NT-2. *doh!*

so Chessrock - the B1 is a good other mic to my NT2? How does it differ?

It's not going to have as much high end hype going on. Less sparkle and sheen (than the NT2) . . . more natural sound, less color compared to a lot of other cheap condenser mics. If you can find a CAD M37 somewhere, those are around $120 and they're more than worth it. But they're hard to find, so the B1 is pretty much the only thing I can stomach in the "$100 and under" range.

I admit, though, that I haven't heard Lt. Bob's M57 . . . but he seems to like it, and he has good ears.

Studio Projects TB-1. You need a tube mic, right?

Well larraga, then you really don't have much left to chose from for under a $100.

SP B1
MXL V67G
MC319
or maybe some SDC...

MC-012
