Hello guys, Im new here. And Im going to start off with a question.

Ive been using a cheap line-level input box to record my amp's preamp out signal with. So far Im liking my recordings, but the tone leaves a lot to be desired. I know there is a lot of difference in quality of the mic preamps. But is this also with the Line-level inputs on those boxes? Will buying a better mic pre with such an input be really noticable?

Thanks

I think that micing your amp will deliver a better quality sounding recording of your work.

I also mic my stuff with my 57. But for easier recording I like to use impulses. That's why I asked if more expensive line-level inputs give noticably better results.

Well in your case then maybe you should us something like a line 6 or the equivalent of, that way you can fix your tone problems and other problems that will come up due to sterile preamp recordings.

I'm not really having tone problems. And the tones I get from using cab impulses are almost 1 on 1 with micing up a real cab. I was just wondering if replacing my cheap mic-preamp that has a line-level input with a better mic-preamp would yield a better recorded sound through the line-level input.

If you are talking about Guitar, the Hughes & Kettner Red Box does a great job of improving the character of a preamp. The dry signal from my guitar preamp sucks ass, and I can't usually mic my amp (noise concerns).
