Whats the difference between mixing or EQing and mastering...try to dumb it down to an idiot (like me)

Mixing = summing all the seperate instruments or tracks to 2 track stereo

Mastering = polishing of the above mentioned 2 track mix

That's as dumb as I can get it

EQ is a different story but will be used definately at the mixing stage and probably at the mastering process.

That's the dumbest answer I've ever seen...... good job! ;)

thanks mate, that's what he asked for. I've practiced HARD over the years to be this dumb when it's called for.

Mixing = Move faders
EQing = Move knobs
Mastering = Make loud

How's that for dumb. :eek: :D

Mixing is taking a collection of individual tracks, mixing them together and producing a finished mix (song, what have you) from them.

Mastering is taking a collection of finished mixes and creating a cohesive production master from them.

And yes, unfortunately, "making it loud" has seem to become part of that. It used to be "bringing it to an acceptable level" but that has changed pretty drastically over the last decade or so... :(
