acorec, the RNP has never been "the best pre under $1K". No one has said that. It's probably the best dual pre under $500.

The RNP is quite good, but not in the class of pres like John Hardy M-1, Great River MP-1NV, Phoenix Audio DRS-1 and some of the other pres hovering around $1K.

Anymore, I use the Fletcher method of putting it in the trenches and the RNP gets the call in tracking equal to some very nice preamps. It is a great piece of gear. I had planned to write my own review but the more I use the RNP the more I think Harvey nailed it perfectly back in August. See www.piemusic.com/mp/rnp.html

Great minds do not always think alike. :D

You are unlikely to be happy with just a $1000 mic pre
without a suitable compressor. (ignoring
room, mic, talent, convertors, etc.).

So either ask for a pre + compressor (and maybe EQ)
for your budget, or raise your budget.

Or get a SP VTB-1 for $200 and an FMR RNC for another $200
and use the rest of the money, about $600
to rent 12 hours of commercial studio time for
your critical, well rehearsed tracks. They will
have U87s thru APIs or some equivalent.

I agree with Fletcher. IMO, the John Hardy Personal M-1 is the best pre under $1K, period. There's not a single pre under $1K that will touch it.

I'm glad you agree with me... but I never said that the M-1 was the "best" anything... I said it fit the description of "clean" and "great"... never said it was "best".

There are several variations of "best" in that weight class... some "bests" are better than other "bests" in a given application.

Since their respective manufacturers' price increase, both the DRS-1 and the ME-1NV are out of the <$1k weight class. If they were still in that "weight class", I would have cheerfully added them as an exceptionally viable alternative... but they're both over $1k USD [and probably approaching $2k CDN or AUD!!]

It's not squeaky clean like a Grace, but it's good clean. Very musical, tight and focused. You can also bypass the transformer for an even cleaner sound.

Funny... I would have called the Hardy "cleaner" than the Grace as I have found the Grace to be rather "hard" sounding [much like I have found the pre-amps in the Drawmer "1969-ME" to be rather 'hard' sounding... so I don't necessarily mean that in a 'bad way'... I just mean it as a 'descriptive' term].

As always... YMMV.

so its basically CYA(covering your ass) if someone doesn't like he product u recommend very smart fletcher..

Actually - I've always understood it to mean "...it's allright if you disagree, but I can't help it if you're a moron...!"

:D :D

Fletcher, Dot, BlueBear, RE or anyone who might have input. . .

Where would you rate the Sytek MPX-4aii in this equation? How does it stack up in the clean, under $1,000 category? How would you compare it to the John Hardy?

Thanks,
Taylor

My only thing with the Sytek is that I've found them not to be as detailed as some other units... Including the DaviSound "Mic-All" preamp which is pretty darn comparable in price.

That said, it does have some much better detail than some other units...

Truth is, I wouldn't (I don't) hesitate to use it on anything for a second, but it's NOT something you'd see in my own rack in 10 years.

As for comparing it to the Hardy, in my opinion, it's an apple/oranges thing, though I know others diagree with that. Yes, while the Hardy is clean and detailed, it's not my idea of transparent, which is where I find the Sytek to fall much closer to.
