sorry about this simple question but

what are the difference in setting up passive and active monitors?

i know that active monitors have and amp built inside. So does it mean that i can plug them directly into my 1/4 inch analogue out on my soundcard?

or do i have to buy a mixer or something...

thanks guys!

The differences between active and passive monitors are much greater than most people think (it's much more than just adding an amp to a passive design). As a matter of fact, manufacturers shouldn't even advertise the two designs as the same model. Like the Yorkville YSM 1 or Tannoy Reveal passive and active models...they are completely different speakers - they may share the same drivers and cabinet, but their design and response will be radically different. Here's a great (very lengthy) article that explains the differences). Which is better?...well, you decide. If "Barefoot" comes around, he may have more to add to this discussion as well.

As far as using active monitors with your soundcard...yes, you can hook them up directly, but you will need to control the volume through software (if you're without a mixer or volume control).
