what's the difference between a compressor and an expander or are they the same? can someone help me out with this question?

Expander is the opposite of a compressor. Basically the way they work is, with compressor, everything above the threshold gets reduced in volume which is determined by the ratio, attack and release settings. With an expander everything below the threshold gets reduced in volume.

They are basically opposites.

An expander is used to expand the dynamic range, a compressor compresses it.

An expander is generally used for noise reduction.

EDIT: sorry noisewreck, we were posting at the same time ;)
