Did I get f#$ked?

I'm not a big fan of downloading programs from the net so I went and bought...yes bought a program from Fry's. I paid $80 for Soundforge Studio XP 5.0. I thought it was a "pro" version of Soundforge. All I rally wanted was an mp3 decoder but I saw this and it said "convert audio files". The only way I can convert something from a wav file is to open it and then save it as an mp3. does that sound right? Has anyone else used this program?

I've been through 4, 4.5 and 5.0 and I love this program (I've not used the lite version, XP). What you can do is copy your wav in question, paste it as a new file and then save it as an MP3 (don't forget to set the compression rate as the default rate is 64k). That way you still have your original as a wav.

Re - converting files

Hi, just an idea for you- If you want to convert to and from wav/mp3 i can vouch for 'SCMPX' , its a small file player/converter that can batch process as well. I use it all the time and have never had any problems. I think its still avaialable from www.sonicspot.com , if not just search for 'SCMPX homepage' in any search engine... oh, and its freeware and only about a 1/2 meg download
