whats the story with phantom power, if im running a mic that needs phantom power through a di box would it need to have phantom power also or is it ok if the mixer im using has phantom power and that will also power it through the di box

the di800 ultra di pro states: optional mains or phantom powered operation

You shouldn't need to use a DI box with a microphone. A DI box will take a high impedance unbalanced signal (eg. guitar) and convert it to a low impedance balanced signal (eg. microphone). Microphones that use phantom power already low impedance and balanced.

DI's can be active or passive. Active devices require a power source like a battery or something, and passive ones don't. (eg. a DI that uses a transformer could be passive; guitar pickups with coiled wire and magnets are passive).

I'm thinking the DI you're looking at is active, and could be powered by 48v phantom power from a mixing console or preamp.

If the DI uses a transformer, you shoudl ask if it's an isolated output, in which case phantom power would not be passed thru the DI to the mic. Usually this comes up when you are using a signla splitter DI, with one direct output and one isolated output.

tks for the replys,

i've decided to get the di800

i over looked the fact about microphones that use phantom power already have low impedance and balanced signal :o , so i wont be using it for mics just guitars and bass

Cheers... :)
