DI Box for Recording Bass

DI Box for Recording Bass Direct???

Hey guys,
I'm trying to record a rough demo with drums guitar, and bass, . .and I would like to record the BASS track direct, . . rather than through an amp. . .

I'm wondering if I will need to use a Bass DI Box, and if so, . .what would be a few decent DI boxes. . .My budget is about 100 bucks.

FYI: I'm recording with a Tascam 8 track reel to reel, and using a Tascam M-30, 8 channel mixing board. . . and its just a rough demo, home recording. . .

I use a countryman type 85 fet direct box, buily like a tank runs from battery or phantom power. It's been gigged hard for 8 years and been resting in my studio for the past three. You could run over it with a truck or drop it off a cliff and it wouldn't put a dent in it. Besides all that it sounds really good too

Do you have a bass amp?

I have an SVTII head that has an xlr out for that very purpose.

Yeah, I own one. I've had it for years. Works fine as a DI. However, it doesn't give you the tonal coloration of a bass amp. This can work fine for some situations, but you're generally better off taking a line level signal out of a bass amp, or using one of the SansAmp units that has already been mentioned. The raw sound of a bass (without an amp) generally doesn't sound so good by itself, unless you've got something to sweeten it up a bit, such as a nice sounding compressor. I certainly wouldn't want to have a Whirlwind DI as the ONLY way to record a bass.
