devo vibe

Hello,

On a track I posted I had the comment that it has a nice devo vibe.
Who can tell me what this means?

Don't know the other thread and didn't hear the song, but to me a "devo vibe" means that your song sounds like a band called Devo's music. Heard of them? They had the goofy hit called "Whip It" back in the 80's.
 
And "Working in a coal mine".... I didn't get into them much. But I can listen to it if someone plays it.....
 
I like Devo's music from around the early 80's. My favorite album by them is called "New Traditionalists" (which contains the semi-hit song "Beautiful World"). I also like the album "Oh No, It's Devo". The earlier album "Freedom of Choice" is more raw than the other two I mentioned but it is still okay (it has the song "Whip It" on it).

yeah, I was into AC/DC back then. I never understood the electronic music. It seemed not real to me. Of course you grow up and your opinions change, and I can appreciate them for what they contributed to music, if not so much appreciate the music itself. Like I said, I can listen to it, but it's just not my thing.
 
Hey Rokket, My friends and older sister were big AC/DC fans (around the time of their album "Back in Black") They saw them in concert and had their albums, so I heard their music a lot. At that time (early 80's) AC/DC seemed to me to be evil and basically a threat to the social order. I was sort of an uptight kid though. Anyway today you can hear that same music in a Disney movie ("Lilo and Stitch"). Now, when AC/DC comes on the car radio it brings back pleasant memories and I have grown to appreciate thier music more and more. I think I liked Devo's music (and similar new wave/techno/electronic music) because it sort of reflected my own feelings of alienation and disconnect...that feeling of not fitting in...but at the same time the music had a positive aspect, like it was saying it was okay to be different.

I agree. Like I said, your opinions change as you get older. It's kind of funny that they play "Hell's Bells" during ball games, too. I don't have the same close-minded opinion of music I had as a teenager. Back then, if it wasn't metal, it wasn't shit. I closed myself off to a lot of good music because of that. No more. I will listen to any and everything once. Except rap. I could never develope at taste for it. Hip Hop is the same for me. Too much sampling someone else's hard work and not enough originality for me. But I could be proven wrong if someone wants to enlighten me...
 
Thanks. I now know what it means. I just downloaded "Whip it" and I was really amazed by the tune: shameless, how the first notes are being stealed from Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman".

Ya know, I never thought about that. Now that you mention it, it is the same few notes. It doesn't surprise me though - that sort of thing has happened alot in modern music. Some get sued, some don't.

You're right! I have the song in my head now (at least the intro, it's driving me nuts), and it's the same progression, just played a bit different. Keeps the lawyers away....
 
Well I guess it's not easy Not to steal nowadays. But shouldn't we just TRY to make things we can call our own?
 
Hey Ferry123...I do hear a similarity (between "Pretty Woman" and "Whip It") now that you all have pointed it out but it still doesn't seem like a blatantly obvious rip-off to me (for example like the similarity of the bass line in Vanilla Ice's "Ice,Baby,Ice" to Queen's "Under Pressure"). Love them or hate them, but overall I think Devo had an original sound. If you are interested in listening to some of their other songs I would suggest: "Beautiful World", "Ton O' Luv", "Don't You Know", "That's Pep", "Patterns", "Big Mess"..........these are all off the albums I mentioned in an earlier post.
 
It's almost similar...

Anyway, this week I'll be off to the library to get some Devo Vibe. I am pretty curious about them.
