demo song I recorded for a band

The guitars need to come up a whole bunch.... :p

Just kidding, I wouldn't really be able to suggest anything for music like this. I'm probably too unfamiliar with what it's supposed to sound like, haha. Recording wise I think everything sounds good!

C'mon Dudes. Obviously Some More Of You That Opened The Thread Listened To It. C'mon My Dudes. You Are All My Dudes And I Love All Of You From One Dude To Another Dude.

Pretty cool, quirky tune. Fun to listen to. My only suggestion would be to bring the vocals up a little in the mix. I could hear them, but they got lost at times. Other than that, cool tune.

Yeah, I totally agree man. the only reason they are that low is because it was a specific request. He doesn't want to be the "focal point" of the music, hence the long pauses between vocals sections. Thanks to those that commented!

Cool edgy synthy song. Ha, what are the words to the first line? Sounds like "Laughin' is to the planet pig." :D What is it really? Ed's right about vox level I think... I understand about the singer’s request but if that vocal could be a notch higher it'd make the song work better. That and more transient detail from vox and drums. They're too compressed IMO.

the weird thick, gross sound of the drums I think might not be the compression, because I doubled checked I'm letting a decent attack through. I have a presonus firepod and there are inserts on 2 of the channels and I used those and I didn't realize the gain knob on the channel would do anything if I was using the insert. It was very very hard to get a decent sound out of those drums and we were on limited time. Later when I tracked synths using the insert I found out that the gain knob still works on the channel even with the insert because the synths sounded like shit too!!!! As soon as I turned the gain knob to zero on the presonus and just used the external preamp they sounded fine. So I guess I tracked kick and snare through some sort of weird "double preamp" setup or something, but it's only a demo for them to have online so it wasn't really worth it to retrack drums- the original drum tracking was on a very limited time budget already, and since I'm unexperienced it takes me a very long time to get a good sound.

I think the lyrics are "as it is in the granite peaks, as it is in the granite peaks!" followed by "riding in the quest for the veteran!" and finally "predetermined cursor for life is a mark!". Don't ask me what it means. Some other choice lyrics from his songs are "Genesis hung in space" screamed at the top of his lungs like he really means it  and my personal favorite "same effect as a boomerang as he twitches on the dizzying platform" repeated seriously about 15 times

I added eased up on the attack of the compression and it sounds better and gives the song more "feel". Thanks for the advice! :)

Excellent. You gonna post the new version to compare?

I started remixing the whole thing cause the band wanted the bass louder but it didn't sound right when i just turned the fader up and I couldn't get it to gel very well- I think maybe because the kick sounds awful. I will post my "remix" when I'm done as well as the other song I recorded from them when I'm done. Hopefully I can get it to sound better. I think they are expecting too much from a hastily recorded demo though. They are trying to compare it to a professional recording they paid over $1000 for.

Here we are....

and the other song....

Is the kick too loud, or does it have too much subsonic boominess? I had a whale of a time trying to get the bass to be audible at all without covering the kick. I used the same mic for the bass and for the kick, and I think this is at least some part of the problem. I haven't had the chance to listen to this on any other soundsystems yet and make adjustments. This is also my first project done with my current set of monitors. A few of the mix decisions, mostly the vocals where i have the la2a plugin set to "nuke" are the decision of the band.

I just listened so far to the remix of the original tune... I think the drums sound more lively and less compressed. :) The snare is a tiny bit too hot perhaps. Other than that, I'd say thumbs up.

Thanks. This is my 4th time recording a band. Hopefully I can get it better next time. It seems like every time I've made dumbass mistakes. I'm going to school for recording in about a month. Does that even help at all? It seems like recording classes get a really bad rap on all the forums.

heh, sounds pretty typical for this style of music
the snare sounds really cheap, but it fits the style of music pretty well
really i think what its lacking is a more full synth sound.. but theres probably no way you could have fixed that for them.
everything sounds good though, an acceptable demo for sure.

Yea that snare doesn't sound that great. Against the synth it sounds dead.
Vox are good now.
I agree about the snyth too, needs something else. Maybe a little delay? Or Pad?
Cool song, I like it!

the synth is an alesis micron and it has a very cheap sounding reverb that i don't like. I think it's a decent sounding synth other than that, not quite like an analog but its good, in my own biased opinion of course. I have it's older brother the Ion which i like a lot. maybe it would sound more powerful If I mic his keyboard amp and mixed that with the DI signal? It sounds pretty powerful coming out of his Roland KC 550.

oh, and do you think the snare might need more high end?

I`m writing this as I listen;;; the synth needs some ambience, reverb.
The guitars are to low, tohe vox need some beefing up, and volume.

I cant comment much on the style as I`m not familiar with this style.

Bring the bass up as well.
sort of to get it a bit more tight. :)

theres many good features about this song, just get those things in line and you`ll have a nice one. :)
