Ahh humma humma humma
Hi all..

This is my first attempt at posting an MP3 for listening. It is of a song (DEMO1) that is in the works, but I would like some feedback as to how everyone thinks it is going thus far.

I can comment on 4 issues right now...

1) Too much compression on the snare (though I like the sound)

2) Too little bass guitar

3) A ringing in the upper register of the bass drum

and

4) No solos or vocals yet :)

Let me know what you think. This was all done in my "home studio" and is part of a project my band is working on.

All the counter guitar sounds could come up against the heavily sustained and distorted ones...In my opinion, the heavier guitar sounds were really kinda muddy, maybe an eq issue, maybe just either way too much distortion or sustain or both....I'd like to hear the completed project with vocals, and see how things separate out in the mix with those...as it is, there didn't seem to be much space between instruments at all...just my thoughts, and nobody croaked and made me an expert...:D....gibs

Thanks for the comment. The distorted guitar is still the original scratch track. It hasn't been re-cut yet :) It is supposed to sound heavy, but I understand what you are saying...

If it makes any difference, I was having a REALLY hard time getting the amp itself to sound the way I wanted it to. The cleaner electric sounds, I am very happy with... but the distorted ones were too '80s sounding for me.

Thanks for the comments. Our drummer likes a REALLY hollow snare. He hardly has any snare engaged on the drum at all.

I will probably post another song in a few days that the snare has a completely different sound (just because of compression and how it fits in the mix). You'll have to stop by and see what you think of that sound.

I hope you don't mess this up with some f-ed up vocals ;)

Guitarsound is a bit odd, but it is a geniune sound in a way, and as such is sounds good... clean guitar could maybe be a little brighter.. Snare IS very compressed... a tad bit less and it will sound great.

These Sennheiser 414 headphones leaves a lot to wish for.. but I agree that the bass could come up a bit.

All in all it sounds very promising and I'm looking forward to hearing the final outcome..

Thanks for the input. I am going to try a little less compression on the snare and to fix the bass tracks. Our bass player lives in another state, so we are waiting for him to come track the actual parts.

The guitars are simply two parts... doubled. One was recorded on a Vox AC-15 with my tele... (that's the sound in the intro). The other was my Mesa Boogie (which was crap'n out all over the place). Then an acoustic on the chorus section played direct into the board.

I'll let ya know when we have something more.

Okay, I'm a Sugar/Bob Mould fan, so I LOVE the guitar work. But let the snare and cymbals do their thing. And maybe syncopate in stereo in the break towards the middle, or right after. And I'd do something with the piano, either add some before and after that short snippet you're using right now, or maybe add a shitload of reverb and drop it an octave. OOOooooh. Do the same thing you're doing, but do it the WHOLE time and with tons of reverb. hehe

A good sound, outside of that damn snare. Can dig! :D

Thanks for the comments. I didn't intentionally do anything like Bob Mould (I've only heard stuff of his from wayyyyy back when), but that's cool if it give you that kind fo gee-tar vibe.

We will have to see what my keyboard player added as far as keys go. He gave me a VS-880 full of key tracks that I yet have to sync in (its cool... I sync his 880 to my BRC on my ADATS. He can work at his own home on key parts, and then we just fly them in).
