Delta1010LT + SoundMAX ?

I am getting very frustrated trying to do some recording, and would greatly appreciate any help you could provide.

My PC contains a sound card built-in to the motherboard and a new M-Audio Delta 1010LT that I purchased because I was sick of the internal card not syncing input and output properly.

So the setup I currently have is:
Standard computer speakers attached to the internal sound card
Headphones attached to analog output 1 & 2 of the Delta1010LT.
Microphone attached to analog input 1 of the Delta1010LT.

Now, the first thing I am trying to do is setup a simple metronome that I can listen to through the headphones while recording parts.

From SONAR, I now have many possible MIDI output devices:
Microsoft MIDI Mapper
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (4)
Delta1010LT MIDI
SoundMAX WDM MIDI
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (2)
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (3)
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (4)
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (5)
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (6)
SoundMAX WDM MIDI (7)

But none of these, when selected, cause any sound to come through my headphones. In Finale 2003, I have a slightly different list:

In Finale, if I select Default MIDI Output Device and have H/W Out 1/2 set to Monitor Mixer in the M-Audio control panel I can hear something, but not on any of the other settings.

I believe my settings in the M-Audio control panel are fairly standard.

Why are your speakers plugged into the Soundmax & not the LT?

Because connecting consumer equipment ( ie 1/8" phone ) to the Delta1010LT requires a system of converters from 2 mono RCA females to 2 mono RCA males to a 1/8" stereo phone male to an 1/8" stereo phone female, and multiple sets of these get rather expensive.

But anyway, I will probably eventually attach the speakers where the headphones currently are and simply switch them when necessary. I haven't done this yet because I can't get everything to properly output to the headphones.

Ok, them-audio website says that when you select 'Delta1010LT MIDI' you are actually putting it through the MIDI out cable. Which makes perfect sense. Apparently, the card does not have onboard MIDI playback ability. So they recommend you download a software synthesizer that could be used to convert the MIDI information to digital audio to be combined into the Delta1010LT's standard analog output.

I recall Yamaha offering a 90-day trial of its XG synthesizer driver many years ago, and their website still promotes it. However, if you follow their download links you eventually just get to a page that says 'this product has been discontinued' or it links to www.yamaha-xg.com, which doesn't seem to exist. Does anyone have the old installer for this or could recommend a different (free) driver?

Alternatively, if someone could tell me why 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth' doesn't show up as an option in Sonar 2 or how I could fix that, it would also solve my problem.
