Latency! Could somebody clue me in on it's meaning / application.

I seem to be striving for the lowest latency I can get. But I have no idea why, other than, it seems that everybody else is doing this (and no, I wouldn't jump off a bridge just because everybody else was... ...Unless the Hawiian Tropic Bikini Team was down there in the river working on their all-over tan). So could someone define latency in terms of use with digital recording / playback. Thanx, Tom.

Latency; "What it means to me"

Latency,
This might not fit a text book's discription, but my perception of this term is that it applies to the ratio of the time that a sound enters your computer from an external device (keyboard, sound module, etc) to the time that your PC will reproduce that sound on your monitoring system. So if your recording a multi-track song and you've laid some trax it is important for your latency ratio to be as small as possible say 5ms or less. Especially if you are playing along with your recorded tracks or punching in or whatever.

Again that's just my 2.5 cents on this term.

latency becomes an issue when you are using native sounds for live recording, e.g, playing a midi keyboard thru a soft synth, or recording an audio track with a plug in.....or when you want a quick graphical interface.

to get the lowest latency set the buffers for the least amount possible, and take your latency slider as far left as it will go....it's kind of hit or miss till you get to a point where your system is stable with the least possible setting for latency.....two factors here are: cpu speed and drivers......but this much is obvious.

Probmel Solved!!!!!

I downloaded the updated Delta/Audiophile driver for Windows ME from the M-Audio site - www.midiman.net/drivers.htm - Installed it, and wouldn't you know... ...the poltergeist in my computer have been exorsized! No more strange pops, pings, and wierd voices (well, maybe those are still there, but at least now I am certain that they are in my head... ...I'll work on those ASAP). I'm still tweeking the settings for smaller latency, but it will do fine where I have it running. When my new memory arrives, I'm sure it'll solve the problem completely (I'll be able to increase my I/) buffer size a little to eliminate dropouts). YOU GUYS ARE THE BALLS!!! The only problem is that now that I have it working, I'm going on vacation for a week, so I won't be able to mess around with it, but I can rest knowing that it sould still be working upon my return. Hey Al, Can you come over and play. I know with you here sitting at the helm for an hour, all my problems (well, musically... ...scratch that... All of my computer problems would be solved, and I could probably finally start to cut back on my medication doses). Thanx again, Tom.
