Delta 1010 and HUM

Hello All...

So, I awoke this morning from a wonderful sleep to hear my wife say that there was a loud hum coming from the studio. She went in and, to be safe, shut down the PC. Probably the best thing to do. So, I turn it on and sure enough there is a hum emitting from my speakers! This happens as soon as power is supplied to the unit so it's not a software issue.

Thinking the PCI slot may be dorked I tried another slot. Same problem. I also thought it may be the speakers (Alesis M-1 Actives). However, it would seem that if it were the speakers the hum would only be in one as the probability of both suddenly going bad is (I think) slim.

So, I've started to conclude that it is the Delta 1010.

Has anyone else encountered this? I noticed one other guy on the net with the same problem. I asked him for the solution. I've also written Midiman and await their response.

Help?
Brad

Is there a way in which you can test just your active speakers? If your using a mixer, what happens when you run a CD-Player into a channel strip and bring up just that fader? It should not be hard to pinpoint whether it's the Delta or something else. Let us know, I'm curious as I own a Delta 1010 and have not experienced this problem.

how much stuff did you have going into the delta 1010.?
Did you also have a synth/sound module plugged up? cos there was one time my module went crazy and it was sending this loud hum into the 1010.

Also, make sure that all your cables are hooked up tightly cos that can introduce the hum.

the delta 1010 is deathly silent, but the peripherals attached to it make their own noise, even if they are not turned on.

Hey everyone...

Emeric: I didn't have time yesterday to just isolate the speakers. I had to go to work and after work I went for beer :-O Anyway, I plan to do that tonight before the Avalanche game. It would be easier if it were the speakers. I could simply take them back to Guitar Center, but I'm still banking on it being the Delta 1010.

CyanJ: The only thing I had going through the Delta 1010 (at the time) was my JV-1010. I too had a time when the JV-1010 freaked on me and started sending hum. BUT... it showed on the mixer. All that took was a reset of the JV-1010. This hum started as soon as the PC had power and at that time I had the JV-1010 turned off.

Interestingly enough, it looks like this is a problem that Midiman is aware of. They provided me a very quick response. Here is the message I wrote them with their reply:

Hi,

The Delta 1010 you have over heated and probably has blown capacitors that
will need to be replaced. This repair is covered by the life time warranty.

Okay...

I called Midiman as requested by their Tech Support. Indeed, the guy on the phone confirmed that they are having a problem with the Delta 1010s overheating. The solution is for their team to replace the capacitors with newer/beefier ones. According to him there are two case designs. One of these actually has vents. His recommendation was to put the Delta 1010 in the very top of your rack for good ventilation.

So, I got my RA number and will ship it back tomorrow. Supposedly they have a pretty quick turn around. I live in Colorado so he felt I'd have it in about a week.

Thanks everyone for their help! I hope this information was useful.

hi lunatic,

Well that information is certainly nice to know about the possiblity of the delta 1010s overheating.

By the way, I also use a roland JV 1010 that is nice. What sequencer do you use?

peace

So, the Delta 1010 is on it'y merry way to the Midiman Medic. I'll let everyone know how the surgery goes.

CyanJ: So far I love the sounds on the JV-1010. I don't do Hip-Hop, but I've been especially happy with the percussion sounds on that card. If you haven't already it is definately worth checking out.

As for a sequencer... that is where I am weak. MIDI is new to me -very new- and this is my first attempt at home recording. So, I've been playing with Cakewalk, Cubase and Logic. Cakewalk seems easy to use but the interface seems very weak and isn't too intuitive. Cubase is a demo so I don't have a manual. That makes it pretty hard to figure out on my own. Logic kept tweaking my video card making it illegible. One app. that I have really enjoyed working with is FruityLoops and SimSynth -cool stuff and alot of fun. I've also got Vegas 2.0 which I've had good luck with in doing basic edits, but as we know that one doesn't do sequencing.

Do you have any recommendations? What kind of music do you work on?

On a side note, anyone here in the Denver, Colorado area?

hmm. this is disappointing. i was looking into getting one, and the thought of having downtime as a known cause because of overheating isnt good. one type of case has vents, and the other doesnt at all? if i was to go out and buy it from mars, would i be able to tell which one has vents and which doesnt? also have any other owners found this as a problem? or could i just put it on the top of an open rack, and really not worry?

Kristian, I think it would be easy to tell them apart. The one I have has vents across the top and on the sides, I don't know what the other version looks like but suspect it has none? Lunatic?

It does run pretty hot, but in a top space rack like you say I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Kristian: I would still say get one! In my case, I had the 1010 in the bottom of my rack just above my patch bay because I wanted to keep cable clutter low. I figured it would be okay since there were vents on the side. Are you still in Austin? If so there is a Mars Music retail store near you. Go in there and make them open the box. I imagine that most of the Delta 1010s on the shelf right now have the newer case with the vents. They have just been selling too well to have older stock laying around.

Emeric: You are absolutely right. There are obvious vents on the side on top. All it takes is a quick feel ;-)

yea im in austin, and i go to the mars a lot and play their Taylor 410. i want it, but i cant have it yet. :(

that was my plan, since the 1010 is $20 cheaper there then on the net undled with vegas 2.0.

I haven't had my 1010 long, and it has the vents.. so maybe you're right and all the new ones they are putting out have the vented case. It does tend to get hot, but I don't leave the computer that it's attached to on overnight or when I'm not going to be using it and so far I haven't had any problems. The cool thing is that like you said Midiman has a lifetime warranty on the thing, so if something happens like this 5 years from now I just call them up and they fix it. All high tech hardware is gonna have some problems now and then, and at least I know they will fix it when it happens. Thanks for the info.

Sorry it has taken so long to update this post. Work became VERY hectic...

So, about a week and a half after sending my Delta 1010 to the Midiman Medics, it returned. I plugged it up and everything worked perfectly.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that Midiman stayed true to their product and took care of business.

'till next time...
