Delayed start in playing files (SX).

I notice in CubaseSX (as well as in VST32) that there is always a slight delay between when the play button is depressed - and when the file actually starts playing. Is this supposed to be? In Sonar, files will begin to play as soon as the play button is activated, but I'm finding that I like Cubase a little better.

Sounds like delay compensation. Shouldn't really be an issue.

Latency/driver type issue, most likely.
If you can, use your sound card's ASIO driver (if it has them (Devices -> Device Setup -> VST Multitrack)).

Thanks, but I do have the ASIO drivers (VST Multitrack) selected - and that nearly two-second delay, at start of playback, is still going on. Maybe it has to do with my soundcard (SBLive)?

Is it multimedia/DirectX ASIO?
If it's the exact one for your SB, try upgrading drivers. That's usually what it is. Or go into "expert" and lower your latency/lower your buffer size.

Thanks again for your help. In the Device Setup box there are four ASIO Driver selections offered:

ASIO DirectX Driver
ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver
ASIO mLAN
ASIO Multimedia Driver

The one that I have checked is the last one, but will give the DirectX Driver a shot and see what happens.
Also, here are the VST Engine Expert Settings:

Audio Priority: High.
Preload amount: 2 seconds
Lower Latency: (checked)
Adjust For Record Latency: (checked)
Record Placement Offset: 0
.......................................................................................................

I wonder if the "Preload Amount" is the reason behind what I am experiencing, because the lowest setting (2 seconds) is, actually, about the delay time that I have noticed.

Hm... Yeah, try the DX Full Duplex driver. It will still run pretty slow, but it should be better than the multimedia driver. What is the mLan driver from? Also, what are your system specs?
Oh, and when I said "expert", what I really meant was Control Panel (oops).
The preload amount shouldn't be an issue, as I have the same setting and my latency is at 6.531 in, 6.485 out (that would be a nice value to know too. It's right below your driver list). We will solve this thing!

Xtjdx,

Yes, I have called up the DirectX Full Duplex Driver, and - though it is still slightly delayed - it seems quicker than the others. My system is an HP AMD Athlon 3200+ (2.20GHz) XP Processor w/ 512MB memory. The input latency is 325.079ms, and the Output latency is 55.918ms.

The mLAN driver regards the mLAN16e expansion board for my MotifES7. I also have Sonar 3 on my system, but the integration of my ES7/mLAN16e w/computer (via Sonar) has seemed to mess that program up. It (Sonar) will not function properly with any other audio files which are opened within it (even after selecting the WDM/KS drivers). So, I will leave Sonar for my mLAN operations, and lean on CubaseSX (which I'm finding that I like better, anyway) for all other musical applications.
