Mixing and Mastering.
Does anyone know the snare that the drummer from Deftones uses?
And also does anyone know the snare that the drummer from A Perfect Circle uses?

I love those snares. Would love to layer both of those snares. mmm

Cheers,
Eck

As far as I'm aware...

Josh Freese (APC) uses either of the following:
6" x 14" Paiste Spirit of 2002 Snare
5" x 14" DW Aluminum Shell Snare

And Abe Cunningham of Deftones uses:
14" x 6" Tama Bell Brass Snare
13" x 7" Tama Bubinga Snare

yeah i've also heard of Abe using the bell brass snare. i have a live video where you can see that he uses a different snare on My Own Summer, it looks huge haha, like bigger than 14" diameter. you can see that his main snare is brass though.

Wanna know the secret behind the deftones drum sound????

Nah, I dont belive that.
Yeah Abe is a great solid drummer but Deftones use sample replacement for the kick and on the snare and toms where needed. Andy Wallace has a few kick samples that he uses for bands.
Abe is only part of the Deftones drum sound. The recording and mixing plays the other half of the sound Id say.

Im more interested in the APC snare since its cheaper and more explosive sounding.

Yeah, I was just messin' with you. The musician has very little to do with the sound.......

I thought Terry Date did most of their stuff, no?

As far as APC, if you're talking about the snare sound from MDN (like Judith), that is all drummer and room. The snare has not a lot to do with that sound (barring one that sounds like crap anyway). I love that big open drum sound! :D

Yeah Terry Date produced most of Deftones im sure, but Ansy Wallace mixed them im sure.
Im more thinking of the snare sound in APCs 10th song on 13th step.
Well cracking snare. (excuse the unintentional pun) :)

I'm not familiar with that track, but I'll try and find it.

Odd though, I can't find a single Deftones album that Andy mixed. I thought I was pretty familiar with all of his work (he is one of my favorite mixers), but I must of missed a Deftones album somewhere.

Maybe I am wrong.
Was sure that was Andys sound.
So Terry mixed and produced Deftones older stuff then?

actually Terry Date did mix the Deftones albums, he is an excellent mixer as is Andy. The issue with the Deftones snare is that Terry mixes in a sample so its not 100% natural. That snare sound was so requested that I modeled one of our samples, snare5, after it. I think Brett Chassen is using it on the new Otep record.

Cool.
Is your snare sample very similar to the Deftones snare?

I plan on buying your drumagog samples as soon as I have the money. your samples sound pretty fantastic in my opinion.

Your Hard Rock drums audio sample sounds well nice.
I especially like the snare.

The metal audio sample sounds good also, but the kick isnt as nice.
The snares sound the same i think.
Maybe the hard rock snare is a bit more explosive.

Good stuff. If only our drummer didn't do such technical snare work. :D

I've come to believe that the room affects the snare 'sound' more then the snare itself. Assuming the snare is tuned and played properly.
