I've come to believe that the room affects the snare 'sound' more then the snare itself. Assuming the snare is tuned and played properly.

I concur. That, and the Drummer. I have recorded some great snare sounds off a POS $50 snare. But it was tuned right, played well, and in a great sounding room. :D

Dont forget half decent OHs play a very important role also.
Ive used NT2s as overheads and had great results!
Even used C1000s and had decent results!!!!!

OHs bring out more crack where as close mic brings out the more dulled but in your face sound IMO.

Cool.
Is your snare sample very similar to the Deftones snare?
Eck

I'm going to do an audio demo tomorrow where I'll use snare5 in a deftonesy beat and you can tell me. The snare sound is definitely different on Around the Fur then White Pony... mine sounds more like the Pony snare. I'll see if you guys dig it. Some guy emailed me today and said he got a pretty deftonesy sound using snare #9 on the disc so I'll put that in the audio demo as well for you guys to hear, both 5 and 9 are brass so it would make sense.

Another thing is there is a ton of ambience on the Pony drums, because Terry compresses his rooms quite a bit and it adds a lot of cool character.

YellowMatter, just for reference, I think snare number 9 sounds really like José Pasillas' snare on A Crow Left of the Murder by Incubus. Listen to the first snare hit on track 5 "Beware! Criminal".

Its one of my favourites.

The samples are great :)

I will look forward to that.

Thanks guys! Still didn't have time to make that demo with snare5 yet because we just got a new warehouse and we've been there the past few days organizing stuff, but I'll have time tomorrow.

I'll check who mixed that Incubus record and see if they are a customer, most of the time when people say "snareX sounds like the one on albumX" I find the mixer of albumX in our client base!

Ok guys, better late then never:

Check out this demo, it uses Snare5 (very much inspired by deftones) and kick1:

very nice sounding snare Yellow, definitely Deftones sounding.

Yeah that snare is sounding pretty nice.
Would be cool to hear it in a mix.

What do your drum sample prices start at?

What snare/mics/pre-amp/desk did you use for the samples?

Eck

Hey Eck, the current price for the disc is $209. You get a lot for that, over 10 snares and kicks and 2 sets of toms (all drums of different sounds and styles) all sampled in 3 room environments, all pre tweaked and hitting 2 inch tape, little to no extra tweaking is needed. You also get a free upgrade to the V2 pack which will have more drums, cymbals, and mappings for all the major samplers.

For mics, I really like the Audix line, as well as some vintage Nuemann condensors and some custom stuff I've had made for me. For pres, I like Neve, API, and Trident. For processing, I used a whole bunch of stuff including some extremely rare pultecs and stuff. We also had about 40,000 dollars worth of the worlds finest drums here too, which obviously is the most important thing.

Impressive set-up! Something I can only dream of at this moment in time. :(

How many different snare samples did you use for the snare re-sampling in that MP3 you posted?

Would it be possible to purchase multi-samples of that snare alone?
I just cant afford to buy a whole library.

Cheers,
Eck

Snare5 has 5 velocities with 4-6 hits per velocity. Unfortunately Eck, we aren't selling the samples individually but I hope you can save up a some bucks over the next few weeks because I think you'll really dig having all the collection, with so many different sounding drums and options you'll be happier.

I just can't afford it atall.
Strugelling to even get money together to set up my studio.
bah! :(

Ok guys, I'm gonna try to hook you up. We had 4 discs that had some print fade so we were tossing them for 20 bucks off and free shipping... well those sold in a few minutes but I put the link back up for you guys if you wanna save a few bucks:

www.stevenslatedrums.com/discount.html

believe me, I've been broke before so I know that deal!

Also, we're doing a DIGITAL BATH audio demo (digital bath is on deftones white pony and really rocks).

We've had a lot of Home Recording BBS guys become clients in the past week and I just wanted to say thanks!

Sweet!
Ill definitely try and take up that offer.

Yeah Digital bath is probably my favourite drum intro sound ever!
The processed cymbal that seems to last forever is a great bit of production genius IMO.
Any ideas how they did that?
Ive got a few thoughts as to how it was done.

Maybe time expansion using analogue tape rather than digital time expansion.
Or maybe cymbal hits edited to together very well to make it sound like 1 long lasting cymbal.
Or maybe even just a special cymbal that rings for ages and was recorded on its own and brought into the mix.

Cheers,
Eck

i think it was probably some HUGE cymbal that Abe has, recorded by itself in a live room, then had the tail compressed to squeeze every last second of sound from it.

Yeah probably the most likely way.
