defrag or not defrag that is the question

Actually, Twist, I clean manually, which is a very 'wet' procedure. I scan through sections I know are useless, and delete the keys, using regedit.

However, If you've not done this before, I recommend using 'Regclean'. It's a program by Microsoft, and clean out useless keys. It's not as effective as a 'wet' operation but is fairly safe to do. Search for it at Microsoft.

I would advise against using thrid-party registry maintenance tools (there are a ton of them if you search at say www.voodoofiles.com) unless you really know what you're doing.

I suggest you spend a day looking at the Windows registry, type 'Regedit at the run prompt. Don't do anything, just look around. Sections you should look at are 'Local Machine: Software' and 'Current user: Software: as well as 'Users: Default: Software'. these will contain 99% of the unused keys. Don't delete anything before backing up your registry. Programs might stop working, though you can always get them to work again by using 'Scanreg' during the bootup at the command prompt.
