Dedicated DAW Laptop

Everyone thought I was a lunatic buying first a high spec mini-PC that turned out to be all german, then
blowing another £2000 on an even higher spec mid tower PC, then buying two further lesser mini-PCs for remote
access of the DAW.
Seems I got it all in before the price hikes.
That makes me a smug lunatic.
Sometimes you just have to take the win and rub peoples' noses in it. Can't be helped and I ain't mad ;)

I think I'm ready to finally purchase a dedicated laptop that will be used strictly for working in a DAW. I did read through a couple of threads here on the subject.

I expect to continue to capture performance data and do all tracking with the Tascam DP-32SD and then import those .wav's into the laptop DAW. I expect to use both Cubase and Reaper as I already have both of them and am moderately proficient with both.

Obviously - I want a lean, mean streamlined dedicated laptop. No bloatware or crap running in the background.

I am aware of PC Audio labs and am considering one of their machines. Any other sources that I should be looking at? I do have a local computer repairman in town who's reputable and knowledgeable. Don't know if he has experience with this - but I did think to ask him as well.

I don't need or want the most powerful machine available - just something plenty capable for editing and mixing in the above mentioned DAW platforms. I didn't want to go crazy with the cost - hoping to get something that'll do the job at or below $2500.00

.
Any advice is much appreciated.:thumbs up: Thanks in advance.
I wish it was possible to have Cubase on Linux, frequent Windows updates make me crazy

I saw something a few days ago warning that Windows 10 users would lose access to updates unless they do X/Y/Z.
I remember thinking it should be warning that Windows 10 users will continue to receive updates if they do X/Y/Z. 😂

Ha! I shall continue to use W10 for as long as I can and I believe that will be a very long time. I have a W11 Dell and I hate it! Both the OS and the ergonomics of the laptop. I have a W7 laptop which I put on the net about once a week. Takes a while to log in but then never a bother.

I'm Cubase, but have a powerful 'ex-german' Win11 PC, which still has some german filenames and directories.
I'm thinking of wiping it, and making it Linux. I know I can get Reaper for Linux.
To go with that combination, I also have my redundant SSL Big Six, which I understand just plugs in and works with Linux.
I have no Reaper experience, but that would allow me to dabble.
It is annoying that much software ties you to Microsoft.

Ray, introduce yourself to "Folderol" over at soundonsound forum. The chap is very deeply into Linux and will I am sure be pleased to help you. I loaned him my NI KA6 interface which works well in Linux. Shame NI went Ts U!

I don't understand why windows updates make anybody crazy? I've never had any grief throughout windows 10 or 11? Sure - sometimes in the office I want to go home, or to see somebody and windows gives me a different closedown option. Update and restart, or update and shut down, with no just switch off option, but most times what needs downloading is already done, so at worst it might take five minutes. It's never failed, or stopped me doing something next start up. Often I have no idea what the update actually did, but what is the big deal? There is no Linux Cubase because all their effort goes into two mainstream OS types.

The other thing is that if you use Cubase (or other serious platforms for your music, you probably also use things like Spitfire, or Kontakt, and they also integrate with Windows or the Apple world. I rather like the way Cubase and the creative cloud all sit happily together with things just meshing together. Why would anybody want to use an OS that doesn't like word, or excel, or my sample library? I like microsoft and I like Apple. They enable productivity, and generate products I can charge for. My accountant likes my business software and so do I. There is no linux version of that, and HMRC like my accountancy package and I can submit my taxes, generate invoices and everything just works on my computer. Make the music, market it, take the money, pay the tax - all on my windows and mac products - interchangeably. Until linux can do the same thing, remind me of it's advantages again? Oh wait, there aren't any? Linux folk cite not being Windows as an advantage? I just don't get it? Windows and Mac versions of Cubase, Audition, Premiere and Photoshop are bad somehow? Can anyone explain how this works?

Same. Agree.

I largely agree with you Rob. Folks on forums seem to get themselves into terrible bother with Windows but I don't know why? I have been messing with computers for 20 years and been through 3.1, 98, XP (deffo best ever!) bit of Vista and now W10. In all that time I have had few problems. I said I "hate" 11? Well mainly just very annoyed with Msoft...WTF MOVE shit? Why remove the ability to move the taskbar? Like getting a new car and finding they have swapped the pedals and the stalk functions around!

Yes, there will be legacy gear which won't run on a new OS but things have to move on. You can't run old engines on modern Pb free fuel!

My first windows was 3.0, and was just DOS with some pretty windows stuck on it.
I was perfectly happy woth Windows ME, before everything had to be updated all the time. And you could re-install it over and over.

I don't have many issues with Windows. I'm running 11 on two current machines and two unsupported machines, one is a 2nd Gen Core I3, the other (my audio/video recording system) has a 4th Gen Core I5. Ancient hardware, but they run just fine. The only driver issue that I really had was with my old Epson scanner software. Epson never updated it (at least 10 yrs old now). The scanner will work with other scanning software but it doesn't have the capabilities of the old Epson Scan. I set up a WinXP system so I can continue to use it.

I have a Linux box, but have never been able to get the scanner to work, in spite of trying several methods found on Linux boards. It recognizes the hardware, but fails to configure the driver software. I spent too many hours trying it with three different Linux distributions, Kubuntu, Ubuntu studio, and Mint. When Mint tried to update from 21 to 22, it totally bricked the system. All I could do was reformat and start over. People go CRAZY when a Win update breaks something. I could live with Linux, but to me, it's not prime time ready, in spite of the headlines that "202X will be the year of Linux!" My Windows system just work. The Linux box is a toy to play with and learn on.

I started with Windows For Workgroups 3.1 that came with our Intel 10base2 network cards. That was fun... hook up a bunch of computers and play multiplayer games.

WinME was ok at the time, but it was limited. 512MB, 1GB if you had the right hardware and knew how to hack certain settings. Try doing 4K video in 512MB! 16/32bit architecture. But we're talking 25 years ago! We have made a bit of progress since then.

Good news... Win11 2026H2 restores the ability to move the taskbar. Top, bottom, left, right and a new smaller option. Maybe they do listen to us complainers!

I have always been windows till now... The M apples are crazy powerful ...Even the 2020 M1 with 16 gb of Ram crush the competition.

I went with a mac mini m4 and moved into Logic Pro...recently now figuring out mainstage and how freeking powerful it is. I am seriously considering getting a macbook pro m1 or 2 and selling off my Nord electro 4 and maybe the MODX+and just use a midi keyboard controller for live gigs. These new M Mac's are beastly and the software that Apple is putting out on the cheap is crazy cool. we'll see.

Yeah, they're pretty wild.
That's the exact spec I've been on for the last 6 years.
I've probably said before I used to upgrade to something about a year old then sell it on 4/5 years later.
Three times that gave me a decent resale value and kept me up to date but for the first time I think I might be in the 'run it 'til it dies' boat.
I just can't think of a reason to upgrade.

I'm not one for chasing the most recent OS but 6 year old M1 does support the latest (from last month) so, outside of catastrophic failure, I think I'm good for another 4, maybe 5, years.

Gosh yeah, maybe one day we will be able to use our favorite stuff on different systems

Oh we surely will! Just look at most any Star Trek episode? No matter that they board a bombed out Klingon vessel or a km long freighter of a long dead race which has been orbiting a moon for 12 centuries, they can ALWAYS patch into the computers and get minimal functions operating.
Same on any crime/adventure show. Phones always work, data gets transferred instantly and no one EVER gets pissed about with a two factor authorization system. Oh yes! Passwords are cracked by the boffs in minutes (why are they always in the basement?)

Always amazes me when the tech wizard in a film rattles their fingers up and down rapidly for 3 seconds on a keyboad then announces "That's the nuclear missiles reprogrammed."
