decoupling idea

From what I understand in order to achieve a well-balanced sound, monitors are best placed in a way that they are decoupled, using bricks, rubber, heavy stands, whatever...

now I've come up with this idea:

Would it help if I would build a desk for my mixing console...and then put like a big concrete plaque (like building material, think block, not tile) onto the bridge, then (just for optics' sake) wrap it into fabric, and then put my monitors on top?

Good? bad? tell me! :)

Or you can get yourself some 1" open-cell neoprene cut to the size of your monitors and put your monitors on that -- it's really all you need....

You mean...kinda like buying Mopads?

I've read about that stuff too, but was wondering if I could do it like this, too?

Because I don't think these foam-type things are that esthetically appealing....plus I'd like to place more than one pair of speakers on the bridge...

Kinda of hard to visualize but it sound like your going to have something big and heavy. (read Pain in the ass)

If you are thinking functionality, then just build something on your desk out of wood and then just make something (as BB suggested) to decouple the monitors.

yeah, I know what you mean...

but no offense....my question still is: would it work? :)

I would go for the heavy block and decouple that.
Why you dont put the speakers on massive stands with rubber/elastomer beneath!
To effectivly decouple the thing must be heavy so maybe not good to put it on the desk?

I've seen desks with cutouts for stands, and..well.. I don't like the way it looks.

So, if I decide to put the block on the desk, should I put something else between the desk and the block? between the block and the speaker?

:)

I think the reason everyone is trying to give you other ideas is because what your suggesting sounds strange and unusual. :D

To answer your question base solely on info provided, yes that would probably decouple the monitors since they cannot cause the concrete to transmit any real vibration.

The rubber/elastomer is between the subsurface (desk in your case) and the mass (block). The speaker is on the mass, directly.

All I know about it I learned from Eric Desart. Here is a thread where he advised another guy about it:

Hope this helps!

Cool, you guys have been most helpful.

So I guess my idea isn't that bad at all :D

oh yeah...one last thing...about the fabric...would it be ok to cover the concrete in that....I want it not to look like just a slab of concrete...

?

I guisstimate that this is not okay, cause the idea of the whole thing is to couple the speakers to the mass. That's somewhat diminished by the fabric. But you could glue a MDF board to the concrete and paint it.
