Man I tell you what. Extreme metal is so hard to record and mix. All you clean guitar players, your shit is easy to record. one or two rythm tracks and you're good to go. Me on the other hand. An extreme axeman trying to be engineer and artist at the same time and playing all instruments except vox??:O

Anyway, anyone who has metal recording experience, please critique these mixes and let me know if I am progressing.

Big V, I`ll wait a bit and let the "Carne Grandes" speak on this one first. My metal experience is pretty much limited to a lead pipe and mirror. Except for what I get ot hear on here. :)

rock on!!!

Hey man...
This is my first attempt at giving advice on here, so take it at that, especially since everything ive heard on here so far is better than my stuff... :-D
I listened to Hot Pursuit, I like the tune...
I would definately work on the mix of the guitars...the lead part should be louder i think, and more bottom end on the rhythm guit...i can tell the sound youre going for and i think youve got it, just bring it out a bit.
You said youre doing all the parts? I would go spend some time working out some really cool drum fills...some really head banging lars who stuff...not necessarily intricate stuff but beat the hell out of those things they can take it...
all in all it kicks ass...
ill check out the other tune on there too...
hope this helps...
Rock on...

Your dead wrong buddy...

Posting an opinion like that one will get you nowhere here, friend. As a composer of Metal as well as Acoustic music,I can easily say both require skill and knowlage.Your comments are rash and unprecidented and give metalers a bad image.A newbie/amature artist like yourself should not have stated what you have stated.I though your stuff had potential but with all that attitude I won't be back for a second listen and I hate to even bump this POS back to the first page but people should know what your about. If your gonna say shit like that, just leave. The experience gained here will far outendure any musical style or taste or opinion.Celebrate all forms of expression don't be closed off from an opinion that could open new paths to recording perfection. It might come from an unlikely source.Unfortunately you'll have overlook that place, seeing only the trail of dust left by the ones who have an open mind.Your not progressing ,your aggressing. And you made yourself sound like an egotistical schmuckle head.

I'm not really a metal fan, but for what it's worth, here's some thoughts.

I liked it, and I think the recording is pretty good.

I'd like to hear more body to the drums, but also bring them into the mix a bit better - the cymbals especially sound separate at the moment. Maybe just a light bit of reverb?

And the snare needs more crack and more thump!

I'd agree that the rhythm guitars could use a bit more bottom end, and the lead sound should definitely be more up front.

I don't know how to critique the vocal sound because I'm so unfamiliar with the genre!

Good work, just needs a bit more aggression in the sound.

For what it's worth I assumed your comments about acoustic versus metal were meant in a light-hearted way - I didn't think you were really saying folk who record acoustic music have got it easy! I could be wrong, though...

Cheers

AB

I listened to hot pursuit.. good song..

the guitar is very direct sounding.. the bass drum and snare are powerless.. those are my biggest gripes.. I like the solo that goes in with the singing.. sounds very chaotic.. almost too much, but cool.. vocals have too much verb..

BTW, clean players have it much harder.. ;)

What the hell are you smokin "buddy". I thought message boards were for posting your oppinions. Or am I wrong? At least in my post I wasn't intending on offending anyone, and I was hoping to spark some oppinions and replys that would alter my point of view, and maybe how and why clean stuff may be more or less difficult to record than the heavy stuff. I was merely blowing off some steam on my frustrations at teaching myself to record, if you took offense at that, then you, my friend, are the one who has a problem. Maybe if I sound egotistical, it is because I have gotten this far with my recording quality by starving to buy gear, staying up all night some nights mixing, tracking, and teaching myself VST software. So hell yeah I am proud of my accomplishments, and I feel I am getting close to figuring some of these engineering tricks out. And why? Because as many of you stated in a remembered thread here, merely to preserve my music in history. So I read a reply like this and I am offended, because sadly, it is you who is close minded. Maybe I enjoy a good debate over an interesting topic such as recording different styles of music. Maybe you should check out my other threads on here before you judge me, as I have always expressed my appreciation for this site and its members. And for placing judgement on me, you can respectfully kiss my ass.

merely to preserve my music in history

Merely to preserve your music in history? What?!

I hope you don't forget to make fun man! Making music and recording music it GOOD FUN! Yes, even death metal can be FUN;) If preserving my music in history was the only reason for me to make music, I would kill myself I'm afraid.

What I'm trying to say is: don't get too frustated... :)

Hey, every musical style is hard to record, if you want to do it properly. Period.

Well of course! Its a blast! I am actually obsessively addicted to it! ;) WHich of course is why I hang out on this board! :)

Dude you aren't the only one who struggles. Clean or not. To think because you struggle you have it worse than everybody else is obtuse. Don't have to be a "Death-Metal" engineer to know what it sounds like it. :)

Anyway, I think your guitar has a pretty good sound, but needs more bottom end. Seems like the kick drum should come down a bit in the low-end too. I like the vocals how they are pretty much, with maybe a tad more volume. Overall, not bad though man. I bet those are some hard licks to get at times.....

(I always thought reggae would be easy to play and record, since it is a fairly 'limited' and 'cliched' style....until I decided to record a reggae song....I started a few months ago and still it isn't finished.......in other words: you have no idea until you try it. In other words: I challenge ya to record a piece like Erland, Jagular or Chris does :) )

OK try this one brotha. Its from my contemporary project. Its months old, and Ive come a long way since this recording, but tell me what you think! I know there are mix problems as well, but just to show metal isn't my only genre. ;)

I listened to Hot Pursuit...

Overall decent job. Good guitar playing.

Machine gun drums - but they're so fast at times it sounds like it's impossible to play. Or nearly so. The vocals have a ton of effects (reverb mostly?). So they're very washed out. You probably intended on that to a certain extent. But I think you might want to back some of that off.

The lead guitar is a killer, but I think it needs to be brought up a bit. There may be a small mistake or two timing-wise.

And lastly, crunchy guitars or clean - they're both difficult to mix. I find it's much easier for a clean guitar to get covered up by a vocal for example. Distorted guitars are much easier to sit in a mix. But on the other hand, it's easy for a distorted guitar to cover everything else up. So they may be difficult for different reasons, but I think they're both equally challenging.

Yeah, go ahead and yawn, because you obviously don't have the intelligence to back up your accusations.
