Just curious... that I have my professional affiliation in my signature file... is that a problem?

At R/E/P [where I'm a moderator] we prefer it if those who post have their professional affiliation in their signature file so we can have basis for evaluating the validity [or lack of] the information in their presentation.

Good point, Fletcher. I'm just a jerk with an ADAT and a few mic pre's that I bought off e-bay, should my advice be weighed the same as someone who runs a studio? Probably not. Signature lines help with this, I think.

And doesn't a signature line help us learn who may or may not have an interest in making money on products? If we know who dealers are versus people who own studios versus musicians, and a dealer recommends things that they sell, can't we all put this in perspective ourselves?

put it in perspective ourselves? are you crazy? be responsible for our actions and thoughts!?!?! someone should ban this guy. ;)

According to our resident expert (DJL) in all things considered spam and unacceptable advertising, links in your signature are considered advertising and are not allowed, at least, by his interperation of the "rules" here. If you are a seller of audio equipment, it has also been suggested that you shouldn't even be allowed to start a thread here - about anything.

Last thread I started here got me banned from the site.

Its X-Mas, for gods sake, be nice, guys!

I agree with others here that signatures can be very helpful in learning more about the poster. And hey: this is a recording BBS, which inplies that all of us have some sort of interest in getting music out to people who might be interested in listening. A financial interest is therefore inherent in almost every member here: some wanna make great songs and get them into the record stores; others run stores and sell gear to musicians, offer recording/mastering/consulting services, etc, while some just want to get the best gear for their budget. Where's the difference, where do you draw the line?

Music is about sharing -- and you can only share if you have the proper equipment to record your sounds, and the means to distribute it and get it out to the listeners. The line between commercially selling music/gear on a grand scale, or just performing & recording for friends or trying to get the most bang for the buxx gear is not clear. What is clear, however, is that each of us has an interest in being a part of the recording "business". Based on that, I don't see how any signature could be a problem here. Sometimes even SPAM posts can be helpful if they are subtle. If you don't like them, well don't read and ignore them.

Harvey, I suggested that, and I'll explain why:

Clearly I want guys like you and Fletcher around, along with many of the other dealers. But I hate to say it, there are some dealers here who pretty much contribute nothing but spam. I think something should be done in light of that.

So the first rule is we should know who the dealers are. That means it ought to be in your signature. I completely disagree with DJL when he suggests such links are spam. He can turn off signatures if he feels that way.

That's the most important rule, but the rule about threads I think is helpful. First, whenever a dealer starts a thread about their product, it always degenerates into this.

Second, most of the helpful posts made by dealers haven't been on their own threads. It just so happens that your great mic thread is a very notable exception; but for example, Fletcher has only ever started two threads. Back when the PMI folks were here (which I appreciated), they also very rarely started threads--but when they did, it tended to be promotional.

I realized when I suggested that, it would unfairly apply to you, but in light of the infrequent and inconsistent moderation here, we need standards that can be uniformly applied by the community through peer pressure.

However, as I am only one small member of this group, I am happy to endorse and follow any standards the community adopts.

Regards,

Jon

Well, I think that every individual stands on his own merit. I think that dealers, prostudio owners, guy on the street should be allowed to post a thread. The very fact that if they go too far, or try to spam something and their post has no other content, then they will be questioned as to where the data is to back up what they are trying to say. This is the history here. I think where the real problems begin is when the poster starts getting people on his/her side and using them to drive their point home to the rest of us. Flaming is useless and it serves no purpose. However, I have posted many times and been flamed and berated by some members when I asked hard questions and asked for explainations as to how the poster or manufacturer came to their conclusions. It is this behavior that is problematic. Opinions are opinions, and everyone has them. But, to start a thread/post to a thread and do nothing but defend your product/services based on rediculous claims and semi-bogus "tests" or "this super duper engineer tried it and loved it better than his $10000 whatever" type of arguments just goes down-hill fast. The final nail is when people are berated for spelling! So, what you did, in my eyes, was simply tell people about a good deal and in no way were you "pimping". But, we should draw the line at posts *like* yours with endless information telling us *why* they are the best in the world and all others are cheap/substandard etc.

i dont think so....cause i heard about wharfedales before i knew deepwater...but then again....deepwater could've already said something to them. lol but anyway...even after the fact, too many people that didnt have a financial stake in it pimped wharfedales not to mention those KRKs and the Yamaha ns10s. i think even blue bear supports them and he doesnt have a financial stake in it.

Deepwater, I think you made just one mistake. You came over and posted in the mic forum thinking it was just like the others, and didn't pick apart your wording before hitting the "submit reply" button. Like a normal person, I would assume you will just learn from that and move on.

Just note how all of a sudden this is a problem because he came and said something specifically on THIS forum...

SHEPPARDB,

You and DJL should team up and start an international spam task force.

Your friend,
Brad

I agree. Its kinda like France over here. I think I'll stay in the other forums.

well it looks like sheppard and djl have done their job for allah...they've ran off the "infidels" and now when they die, they'll get 32 virgins!

Merry Christmas, but I have to say I'm with Sheppard on this one. Have you read the posts? Very odd stuff for a pimp to post IMHO.

And WFT the Dragon for banning Harvey. Get after the right people for F*CK'S SAKE.

I resent that comment. France is a beautiful country full of wonderful people. The Mic Forum is full of spam cops, egos and donkeybrains. I love both, but for very different reasons ;) :D

What if I were to advertise for someone else in my sig?

Would that get me banned?

What if there were a tried and true vendor, whom I highly recommended for whatever reason... is that spam?

We need definitions.
