Jai guru deva om
I just received these Bob Orban designed dbx242 eq's tonight and I'm asking myself:

Who in the world would get rid of these eq's???

I spent a while playing with the eq on a kick drum, which is typically the most heavily eq'd track in my studio during mixdown. It is unbelievable how this eq sounds! The entire signal path is certainly "clean enough"...I've read where some folks have had these things modified etc.

I made a clip for you guys to check out. The way it goes is:

4 beats: eq out
4 beats: eq in
4 beats: eq out
4 beats: eq in
8 beats: eq in + Safe Sound P1's compression

It's simply me switching the bypass in and out on the dbx unit, and then activating the Safe Sound compressor at the end.

Scroll down to "Kick_P1_dbx242" which is a 192 mp3 file. I typically select "download" option and select "open" if I don't want to save it.

Signal path is:
Nuendo out via RME Hammerfall
DDX3216 send out
Safe Sound Audio P1 in
dbx242 inserted in P1 before compressor
DDX3216 return
RME Hammerfall to Nuendo

I'm mostly using subtractive eq (newbies you should always try this before boosting eq :) ) so the volume drops when the eq is engaged...this ain't real scientific! I would however suggest you play this back through studio monitors and not crappy pc speakers.

Anyhow, I spent a fair amount of time playing with the eq and I am really enjoying them so far. You can dial in very easily what you need with full control over cut + boost, frequency selection and q width. The low and high shelving has a 6db per octave slope, or selectable 12db per octave to really get things going.

You canNOT do this with a plug in, sorry.

Just beautiful units, I'll probably end up buying 2 more some day! Harvey Gerst owns 5 and suggested I try them out...thanks Harvey. My quest for 2 all purpose versatile channels takes another step towards goodness...soon enough...better a/d conversion???

I have a pair here too, but I havent truly had a chance to give them a run like I want. I probably wont get to, either, for another month. I have with headphones, but you cant EQ shit that way. I do like them better than plugs so far though.

How much did you give for yours?

Well, all told...the guy had two in mint condition and I won one for $100 + $15 to ship it. I ended up buying both for $250 shipped to my door. Long story...I botched my bid and told him I intended to outbid the other guy so he let me pay a little more for both.

I have seen them go for as little as like $78+ but these were hardly used. They look new except for a little paint missing around the rack holes.

Awesome boxes, I didn't mind paying a little extra for good ones from one guy.
