DBX Compressors question

hi guys

I need a basic and decent compressor just to control the dynamic going into my interface. Nothing fancy.
I am looking on DBX's right now and I never had a hardware compressor before. I always use softwares.
DBX has a lot of models from 160, 160A, 166, 166xs, 1066, 56671676767XS or whatsoever.
I was wondering if theres a quality difference between the 100 series, 200 series and the 1000 series or every each one.
I am also looking for a dual channel compressor.

On the whole, the best quality/cost ratio for a normal, non-pro would be either a 166xl or a 266xl. good price, adequate quality. Of course, it's just my opinion. Some may have a different one.

The 266 is the cheaper type, the 166 the midrange, the 1066 the better and the 160 the best, judging by price per channel. The 160 and 166 have automatic attack and release control while the 266 and 1066 have manual attack and release controls. The 160 is single channel. [Edit] Ant the 166XL got attack and release controls.

Will a hardware compressor improve your sound in some way compared to using plugins? I doubt it unless you get something more interesting than a dbx.

I have an RNC, had a DBX 160, and have an 1176.

I sold the 160, never use the RNC, and use the 1176 all the time. A transparent comp won't do much for you. I love the 1176 because it has some character.

The 160 had some but I only liked it on vocals. So if you want a vocal comp I'd get the 160. If you want a versatile all around jack of all master of none I'd go with an RNC. Otherwise stay in the box.
