Daw? or monitors?

i've expereienced the same issue. I'd render a song to a .wav file in reaper. Then after opening it in iTunes, the track would sound quite different, such as the bass frequencies being more pronounced than when i listened to the track in reaper.
Is there an equalizer in itunes or some sort of enhancement? All of those mp3 playing programs seem to have some sort of thing like that, which makes them useless for critical listening.

Itunes defaults to a sound enhancer, yes. If you have never dug through the menus to turn it off, it is in use. It would make stuff sound significantly different.

Find it then A/B the two settings and make your assessment.

Different in a good way? or bad
That depends. For example, if the enhancer adds low end and your mixes are a little thin, it will sound better. If you mixes are a little bass heavy, it will sound worse.

The enhanser is probably designed to make lap top speakers sound passable. Since you are listening on studio monitors, you don't need it. You really don't want your setup lying to you.
