I am sitting around here bored to death and wish some of you guys could come over and Jam tonight. That would be a hoot!

If I left right now, I might get there in time to turn around and drive back to Toronto. :(

Thanks for the invite though. :)

I'm gonna take apart my 244 and see if I can fix up the transport issues a bit.

Cheers! :)

I'm jamming with you in spirit, but physically I'm cleaning my garage. :(

heh..

i'll come on over when i'm on tour. its gonna happen, i swear... any day now.

I have a good spare rubber belt for the head mechanisim if you need one. Not the capstan but the other one.

It's all about going digital, then, isn't it?

......................... ;)

I sure hope it was but I can assure you that it's not ;)

The belt I'm talking about is the one I took out of the 244 and replaced with a factory fresh one you sent. When I did some comparisons, I couldn't really tell the difference between the new and used. The "used" one surprisingly looked and felt at least 90% factory fresh. That's the one I'm offering to Jeff. I'm actually taking the 244's etc .. with me 'cause they won't cost a thing to transport (in comparison) + it's no money lost for me, really. I'll take the chance with 'em. ;)

It's a 12.7" length capstan belt on the 244.

No, it's the smaller of the two .. the head mechanism belt ;)

HaH! wondering if you are talking about "net-jamin'" sorta thing? Good one.
Analog-Heads Bros' band's destiny: "Jam like a Man or Don't jam at all!"
:D

Thanks for the belt offer, Daniel but mine seem fine. No problems getting the heads to move in and out, no problems winding or rewinding. Only problem seems to be getting the take up spindle to consistently turn in the play or record mode.

I did start another thread on that procedure with some pictures of the offending piece which ARP pointed out as the cam roller on the top side of the transport. I did clean it with some Caikleen RBR and it seems to be better then before but not 100% yet! :o

Anyway, at least I know how to take the machine apart and get to all of these components when I order up the new ones.

Dave, Do you think it could be the control belt that's weak and causing this problem? The belt that's in there now seems to be healthy and decently tight.

Cheers! :)

Sometimes a sticky rubber part has to be replaced.

The takeup reel is driven by the two little rubber tires. If you use the search function, you may find where I quoted the exact size of the tires. If the control belt was loose, the heads would not actuate back & forth to contact the capstan,... or perhaps not fully retract.

Replacement of the two little rubber tires is almost a total teardown of the cassette mech.

Cheers! ;)

Well the top one can be very easily removed by prying off the C clip that holds it in place and to get to the top one, I only have to take the top panel off, which I now know how to do!

I didn't get a real good look at the lower cam wheel though so you might be right about the tear down to get to that one unless it is accessible once the top one is removed? ... I didn't venture that far into it.

I know because I can see the top one driving the take up spindle but I am not sure what the lower cam wheel is driving. Do you know it's function?

Cheers! :)

Remove the mech, disassemble, and remove the motor/cam assembly.

Once removed, it's easy to replace the little rubber tires on both sides. I don't know of any other method. The top tire drives the left or right spindle, and the lower tire is being driven by the motor.;)

*If I didn't just lose a 40 Gig hard drive TODAY, I'd have a pic for'ya, but I believe I lost all that data PERMANENTLY! It's been a bad day for my 'puter in the office, but that's probably another post! ;)

Sorry about your crash, Dave. :o

I've had a couple of doozies, myself, in that department and lost tons of good stuff.

Take care and thanks for all your help with my new toy here. It's appreciated.

Cheers! :)

Ooh, buttons!

Well,... I guess I got some track 0 format corruption.

I came home & my oldest son was installing Disciples 2.
The install failed, indicating the disc was full.
Certain other flaky things happened, and I pressed ctl-alt-del & pressed "shut down", and it kinda went down but seemed to freeze at the "shutting down windows" banner. After a bit, I hit power, rebooted,... aaagggghhh,... "No Operating System".

I had a backup boot disc, but the damaged disc simply won't mount, basically with an "unknown format" error. I lost about 3 years of family photos, gear pix & who knows what. Aaagghh. Both my son & I were very upset, but hey,... life goes on.

I've since done a recovery disc install and got booted up to windows again, and I've copied all my home recording wav master files back from my other 'puter. Took about 6 hours from the crash til this point. I kinda hoped the disc would mount as a secodary drive, but it won't. I don't know if this data is recoverable, at all. Data recovery? Aagghh, somtimes I hate computers!!

Try freezing (see other thread) and R-Studio. 'Unknown Format' usually yields better results to the drive disappearing altogether.

Had a similar problem with a 1 GB xD card when I was on holiday in Christchurch with the family a week ago. A couple of hundred shots disappeared when the card reader glitched. I didn't mind spending $39.95 on software that recovered it - Diskinternals Flash Recovery. (actually I think they have a hard drive tool as well).
