You might have to be really clear about the difference between turning a phone OFF and turning it to SILENT, which is what a lot of people consider OFF to be..

Get an old blender and an old phone, smash it up with a hammer, and stick it in blender and leave somewhere everyone can see it, I reckon...

You got that right Armistice! I think vibrate messes up the signal more than anything.
Have you ever experienced problems with interference from cells?

No, but that's because I only record myself and have no friends...

:laughings:

Then what you have to do is put your cell on your amp or what ever and call it from a land line. :laughings::eek::laughings:

I recently listen to the tail end of a song I had mixed and heard a loud ticking at the end of the song during the fade out. I'm pretty sure it was from a cell phone.

Sorry Harvey--that was me. I was hiding behind a gobo clipping my toenails.

Okay, I'll send you one once I get them.

Thank you so much Doc and do you have a "violators will be chopped up and fed to the hogs" add on sticker? :laughings::laughings:

Is there shielding from this? Or are we to just not allow cell phones in the part of the studio that tracking is happening.

What will you do with that mix go in and try to eliminate it? Or find the track that it is on and redo?

It's funny that I haven't see or heard of this problem being spoke about before ..... Damn Technology.

In this case, it was only audible on the tail end of the right track fade, so I simply replaced it with the tail from the left track. Nobody noticed.

The problem is RF signal decays logarithmic much like sound does. Without going into the math of free space attenuation, once you get 3 feet away from the transmitter the radio signal has decayed 99%. So if you have your cell phone in your right pocket while playing electric it's almost certain some bleed is going to happen.

The solution is to keep all wireless equipment a fare distance away from your signal chain, especially anything before your preamps.

Thanks Racherik ....... but I still want to see the math of the free space attenuation.:D

Hey Moresound,

I call them "phone bitches"!!!:D

I deal with this all the time! I F**kin' HATE cell phones!

I have 2 different bands that I play in, and the players/members are constantly figeting with their "latest technology"...

They complain when the band room practice recordings have some type of interference...but can't seem to understand why?:laughings:

and band members always have the nerve to place blame on the drummer / engineer?:laughings::mad:

Well then Vessel as in your signature .... let discuss the future of this problem!!!! ;)

I've had a guitarist come in that by habit would alway put his iPhone on top of his amp....why he did this I have no idea, but it was a pain in the ass to deal with. Before every take I'd have to get on the talkback "Hey man, can you get the phone off your amp I'm getting interferance and I can hear it when it rings....He was a pretty popular man let me tell you. That phone musta rang twice between every take.
