I slammed my right index finger in a car door on the way to a gig when I was 17 - I couldn't play very well anyway but I royally sucked that night. Lost the nail etc etc . Drank a bunch of beer to numb the pain/embarassment...

oh I'm gonna bleed alright. Just the one gig last night had it pulling opne. I have 6 more to go before it gets a days' rest.I want you to bleeeeeeeeeeed foh meh !!

I'm sure superglue will hold the wound closed, but it'll still hurt like a MOTHER F--ker, and be tender as all hell.

I have superglued pretty bad cut on my ring finger tip. It works pretty good.
Get a single edged razor blade and shave a thin piece of callous off your heel. Cut the piece of callous to fit over the cut and glue it on with the super glue.
It will get you through a gig that involves heavy string bending...and you won't get blood all over your fretboard

actually the last two nites I've tried both and the New Skin woked better.
The superglue holds the wound together but the edges of the superglue catch the string.
So I superglued the wound with just a small line of superglue and then put New Sking over it. That works for about an hour and a half.
But really ...... I've managed to play 90% of everything without using that finger!
it's quite a challenge ..... to find different fingerings for the chords and playing runs and solos using mostly my ring and little fingers is really gonna get my fingers in more control. This is actually kinda cool in the way it's forcing me to stretch. Well, except for the pain thing.

You never said exactly how you cut your finger though.
Now with your skills you should have been able to have picked up a lefty guitar and played that way. I tried playing lefty once and I felt as though I was in the special Olympics ~ not a pretty picture.

I used to play with Gregg Wright, who's played with Michael Jackson and Mick Fleetwood, who played lefty but just turned a righty upside down. I actually can play that way a little bit now.You never said exactly how you cut your finger though.
Now with your skills you should have been able to have picked up a lefty guitar and played that way.
As for how I did it .... it was dumb as you knew it must be:
you'll never believe it. I was feeding the fucking cat and I had just pulled the top off the can and when the can slipped outta my hand, reflex made me snatch for it with the hand that had the can top in it and I actually pushed that top edge right into my fucking finger ..... pretty damned deep too!
I felt it sliding into the fingertip like a razor.

I've had to superglue my fingers several times in the past, the worse was when I had a woodworking job and was sanding a piece of wood with the table sander....the piece of wood went airborne and it got my thumb and index finger pretty good-on my picking hand! It was pre-superglue era and picking was total torture on that gig...

what worked best was a thin line of super glue to hold the wound closed and then a coating of Nu Skin to provide a fleshlike playing surface.

That's a bummer when playing is how you keep the lights turned on.
I could never be dependable enough to be in a band because I smash my fingers regularly at work.A few weeks ago I peeled the top of my hand off and I could see all my tendons,the first thing I did was wiggle my fingers and let out a sigh of relief when they all worked.

You should have seen it when it was peeled open.
Luckily I don't play guitar with the back of my hand,I'm quite sure you had the worse injury from a guitar playing standpoint.
