Just spent three days on this cover of America's "Daisy Jane" (Beckley 1975)

There's a vocal harmony that I enjoyed doing but most of the backing was synthed from various sources.

Any suggestions on how it could be made better would be very much appreciated.

Don't get Daisy Jane into a Daisy Chain!
Alan,
You seem to have an affinity with the songs of these fellows. The triangle (or was it cymbal) in the 1st section seemed a little odd at 1st.
You may need to temper the cymbals a little - the string synth sounds better - no Gouda there!
A big leap from the last track in all sorts of areas.
Well done.

There are some things I'd have done differently, but I have to say, I enjoyed it.
Nicely done!

Hi Rayc, yeah I used to play a lot of their stuff. This recording was the result of a lady hearing one of my old dusty recordings from a time gone by when I had little more than a portable recorder in a backroom with an open window, dogs barking, cars passing by... not terribly sophisticated. She said, "Well I am sure you could do a better one now..."

So three days later, I had finished this one and it melted her...

It is a triangle, the original didnt have it there in that place but I am not totally sure that I can't hear it later on in the song. Maybe just a jangly acoustic guitar but I thought the effect was... um... effective... I could take it out and no-one would miss it

Mewsician2, thanks for dropping by, I would be interested in hearing what you would do differently. Its one rendition of a song I liked. There must be countless ways of doing it. I would appreciate your comments :)

Ok, triangle removed... sorry, I overwrote the original post.

The strings could come out a little more for me, during the pause in the singing. Didn't recognize the tune until the chorus, been a while.
The mix sounds pretty sweet overall. Performance is fabulous....

Thanks for that, yeah I wonder sometimes why I dont pick it up until its pointed out. I had the feeling the cello was a bit lower than the vocal and for a solo should be at least equal.

I have lifted the cello by 2db. How does that sound now?

First noticed the kick drum. So subtle, and so full of character. Loved it. Yeah... Great stuff on that kick drum, man. The piano sounds nice, but I'd like to hear some pretty thick reverb on it, keeping the reverb lower in the mix, with maybe a very slight chorus-effect on the verb.

The snare. Dude, it sounds good for what it is, but I can imagine a nice full, round snare with a some-what loose chain on it. The one you have on it sounds paper-thin. It fits nicely, and I suppose the drums are as done as they're gonna be, but man. Hearing a nice round full snare (like your kick) on it would be heavenly for a song like this.

Great vocals, good levels, nicely balanced...

Nice ending, too!

Really liked the mix work on this one, GL. Great job.

Thanks Poetic, somewhat overwhelmed at that, I know you give honest responses so what you say is valued the more. I have added a touch of reverb to the piano and loosened the spring on the snare a notch. Not a lot in either case but see what you think...

Just stepped out of my comfort zone and tried to fatten up the final mix. I was being influenced by WaveLab and I had stacks of headroom on the previous recording, apart from some wayward peaks that were reaching for the edges of the playing field. Applied some mild compression, thresh -2db, ratio 2 and brought up the gain. This is where I feel like I am the sorcerer's apprentice...
