For instance during live gigs for balancing a signal at instrument level (like bass) to get it across the room from podium to console.

Yep. They can be little lifesavers in a live gig situation. You usually can do signal attenuation if the system is too hot, you can do ground lifts if there's Radio Moscow or hum going on, match impedences from high to low for signal strength over long runs (like a stage snake), match connectors, and so forth. What the hell do we do with Harry's signal? That sort of thing.
