D/A converter

what exactly does this do, and is it essential?? I am going to purchase two Bi-amped monitors but were considering two passives and a 500W studio amp. Would I need a D/A converter for either of these two setups?? Thanks.

A D/A (digital to analog) converter converts a digital representation of a signal to it's analog form, which is essential before sending it to your monitors.

An A/D (Analog to digital) converter does the reverse.

Both A/D and D/a converters are essential if you are planning on recording using a computer or other recording setup that uses digital storage.

not sure if it was asked or not. So wait...I guess what I should have asked is....If I am running my monitors out of my M-audio 410..that should have D/A converters built in right? so I really wont need one? thanks

That is correct.

It depends, if you want to clock to another source, you can, thereby bypassing your soundcard converters, which is what I do. It depends on the interface and the connection options you have. I upgraded to better converters, so I no longer have to use the existing ones on my soundcard.
