What's an effective $200 mic for cymbals? I see alot of drum "packages" covering bass, snare and toms, but none of these give any attention to the brass.

Cymbals are generally handled via the overheads... it's not often you see them mic'd on their own....

Although I have had to mic a ride because the drummer was really light on it be creased his crash. None of his cymbals were round. As for mics, $200 isn't gonna get you much. I say save up more. If that's not an option, sm57's are useable I guess.

Try this...

I have a buddy who bought a (gasp) Radio Shack PZM for his overheads. It is of course mono, but he gets by. It cost like $50. It would be better to have a good condenser stereo pair, but for $200 your choices are limited. You could probably find a pair of used Oktavas or C1000's for around $200 if you looked hard enough.

I spaced pzms. That would work well. I use 2 for micing pianos! Older radio shack ones were great! It's tought to screw up making pzms!

O.k. ..the C1000's sound like a winner. I should have clarified overheads..that's what I meant.
-Thanks
