Cutting and putting together

when i try to do this I always have different changing sounds in the hissing background noise whenever is getting into the next part i put together. Can anybody help me with preventing this?

Is this background noise from poor gain staging on the tracks? Making that assumption, and that the clips you are editing together are of the same source (voice, instrument..), why is the noise so high as to be that much of a factor and do the record levels change that much?

The changing sounds could be a result of non-consistant recording. For example, if you record a guitar part at different times, chances are you'll have dramatic changes in sound.

The hiss, probably due to a noisy environment.

it probably is poor gain, because i dont know anything about it.... On my pre-amp the gain switch is a little less than 3/4 and the drive is at half. I don't know if this would be the problem.

when you have the record enabled, but you aren't actually playing, where are your meters sitting?

when you are recording (actively playing), what is your average meter level?

having a strong signal to noise ratio (the difference in meter level when actively recording as opposed to just having record turned on) is necessary if you want a good, clean, mixable recording, and especially if you want to edit.

i dont know if I should be this close but i'm probly only 2-3 inches away from the mic with my guitar. To Close?

I'm assuming you meant -53 to -51



That seems like a pretty high noise floor. I average around -83 db when not recording anything. You need to find the source of that noise.

i second that. is your PC in the same room you are recording in? is your air conditioning unit loud? you may need to put your PC in the closet (an adjacent closet is even better).

oh, and you could stand to go a little hotter than -18 too.

i'm assuming that you are recording in 24bit. if you are doing 16bit, then you definitely need to go hotter.
