Some thoughts please,
I had Cubasis and after fighting the bloody thing for about a year or so it got to where I was getting some very pleasing results, I did both backing tracks and complete songs.
Anyway the program decided to crap out on me and I could no longer access it, as my computer was getting old I decided to upgrade to XP and lo and behold!.......... the old cubasis is no longer compatible so I am at the point of buying a newer version, no big deal as it is affordable, but I see so many comments here about the product dropping out, crashing and doing other various hair pulling stunts that I am starting to question the reliability of Steinberg's products, I am not overly impressed with their back up so far, does anyone have any comments on reliability of this or other companies' software.
Clive

Steinberg's products are very reliable. What you read here about problems with crackle, crashing and so forth are mostly from people that are using a demo or a pirated copy or have an IQ of about 10 when it comes to computers.

I use Cubase SX 2.0 and have had ZERO problems with it. I'm sure there are things I haven't tapped into yet with it, but it's running smooth for me.

I'd agree with the comments above about pirated copies and using computers. A lot of the bitching (not ALL - again not ALL) can be attributed to using cracked/pirated copies. I can't imagine anyone expecting those copies to function properly.

This type of software isn't just "install and away you go", you need to spend some time with configurations and tweaking your system for best performance. I've never used Cubasis, but there are other good offerings such as Cubase SE and SL in addition to SX.

My 2 cents.

clive if you want a good alternative try powertracks from pgmusic.com.
29 bucks. does 48 tracks. just try the free demo; ive been a user for years.
the best part is the upgrade policy.

Cubase SX 2

Hi all,
from the official Steinberg site:

Dear Cubase SX 2.x customers,

Since our announcement and shipping of Cubase SX3 at the beginning of September, some of you have voiced concern in these forums that Cubase SX2.x will not be updated, and that no existing technical issues will be remedied.

We are pleased to say that we will be making an update for Cubase SX 2.x available before the end of December 2004 which will resolve several issues which have been reported by you in these forums. These include ReWire support with Reason on Macintosh multi-processor machines, reported clicks in Crossfades and a potential problem with automation data on “frozen” VST instruments. We will be devoting considerable resources to this maintenance update to Cubase SX 2.x, which we will make available as soon as we can.

We’ll keep you informed of any developments!

Thanx,
Steinberg Support Team.

I hope this help you to decide.
Ciao

Manning,
Thanks for the reply, does powertracks record acoustic/analog sounds? Which is the prime reason I got Cubasis.
Clive

clive - powertracks will record ANYTHING. midi tracks , audio tracks.
acoustic guitar live, vocals. anything your hearts desire. just try the demo.
the sound quality you get purely depends on the sound card convertors you have.
when you load the demo for the first time. 2 important things.
1. declare to powertracks which drivers to use for the sound card.
2. you will see a "ty" column on each track. a symbol. like a midi plug.
if you click it you will be telling powertracks your recording a mono wave
track eg: acoustic guitar. another mouse click and it turns to stereo. eg : a STEREO acoustic track.
the powertracks forum at pg has a great bunch of pro users who
are a great help if you ever need asistance.
also check out powertracks INTERNAL effects. no external plug ins to buy.
amazing for 29 bucks.
i'm just a super happy user.

Heeeeyyy...

This is a Cubase forum. No happy users allowed.

Get out !

:D

Manning1,
I looked at the site and will go ahead and get it. Many thanks.

clive - some other little tips. your going to be very surprised by what it will do for you. REALLY EXPLORE powertracks. i will call it ptpa to cut the
typing from now on. notice very carefully some key aspects. that TY i already mentioned. note carefully the waveform editing icon. you click on a track you want to edit, and click the icon in the tool bar to bring up the waveform to edit. note also some tricks. if you notice you can paste many times. this is usefull for doing quickie drum tracks. just lay down one bar of say a drummer or say a single drum loop you imported , hi lite it COPY then up in the menu select paste and notice in the dialog you can enter how many times to paste. this is but one example of TRICKS. there are 1001 tricks in ptpa.
like this. also note the notation editing. and the midi features.
and the EVENT EDITOR. good for fixing midi input errors if say one is playing a midi kbd a bit sloppy. also note the vu meter for making sure you get the right level into the sound card. i must stop now. as this is a bbs.
if you need help just post say in the computing and soundcards section
of homerec something like "hey manning1".or in the powertracks forum.
at pg. also REALLY REALLY EXPLORE THE EFFECTS BUILT IN FOR AUDIO TRACKS. BIG NOTE>>>>the noise gate has rescued me man MANY times with noisy guitar amp players. play around with the threshold level.
peace.

Manning1,
Thanks again, I'll hold you to that, I will place my order next week as I am going away for a few days, then it will take about 1 week to get here from the USA, compared with up to 10 days interstate in Australia (figure that out?).
A new learning curve.

Clive

clive - just an idea. if you have a high speed connection you know you can download in the interim ? mind you it might be worth the weeks wait.
because if i remember when i first ordered years ago it was quite a nice package of CD's (included a video if i remember) and detailed user manual.
my wife automatically orders the new upgrade version every xmas for 19 bucks for me to upgrade as a stocking stuffer.
when you get it make sure you read two things. the help in the manual
is extensive and the tips of the day stuff.
i wish you great times with it like i have had.
peace.

by the way clive my bag is more recording live audio with powertracks,
i KNOW midi but those midi pro's on the powertracks forum know way more than i ever will re midi , they are ultra midi pro's to the max compared to me.
ptpa is very intuitive so i doubt youll have problems. i never have.
they know midi tricks i havent even thought of yet though.
you can ask me about audio (wave) tricks in the computer /sound cards section here if you wish. and the midi pros on fancy midi tricks at the pg forum once you get the basics down if you wish.
also NOTE the new TC helicon feature. its real neat apparently for creating vocal harmonies etc. when i get a chance i'm gonna try it on guitar leads/
harmonies.
peace.

OK, enough pimping PowerTracks Pro in the Cubase forum ;)

Man, I used to use that back in the mid 90's on an old Dell Laptop with a MidiMan interface...those were the days. I thinks it's cool they're still producing the software and keeping it fresh.

I tried downloading one of the instructions discs but it took forever and then my burner couldn't read it so I'll wait, time is one thing I have a bit of over the next couple of weeks as I am flying down to hospital on Monday and won't get get homefor a few days, and I have another project waiting to be finished, a pair of foldback monitors almost complete but I have been banned from using any machinery or doing anything other than read or use the computer and watch TV, so one thing at a time.
